WORDLE - anyone else trying the daily online word game?

I recently stumbled across WORDLE online.  For the uninitiated, it is a daily word guessing game where you have to try to guess the word in 6 or less tries.

This, from Wikipedia, explains the game:

Every day, a five-letter word is chosen which players aim to guess within six tries. After every guess, each letter is marked as either green, yellow or gray: green indicates that letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means it is in the answer but not in the right position, while gray indicates it is not in the answer at all. The game has a "hard mode" option, which requires players to include letters marked as green and yellow in subsequent guesses. The daily word is the same for everyone. The game also has a dark mode as well as a high-contrast theme for colourblind accessibility, which changes the color scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue.

I have found that most that most days I can get the daily word in 5 tries or less (mostly 5 though).  Interestingly, there is a spinoff of WORDLE called LEWDLE, where the words are lewd, or naughty, words.  I have better success with LEWDLE than I do with WORDLE . . . getting the word in just 2 or 3 attempts.  Not sure what that says about my private school education 🤣

Another baaaaaad start, and even my eliminator didn’t seem so very enlightening… but on reflection, I could see only a handful of possible solutions.

The only vowel other than E that could possibly fit would be U… with “queen”, or another E. It had to end with “en”. 

It could also have been sheen, or even hymen if we tread into poetic love / anatomical waters.

But my first instinct was “seven” and that’s what I played.

I was on the ball, solving each word, using logic and inspiration… and then, BAM! It wasn’t “handy”. Grrrrrr. I could have played GHOUL as my starter and that would have eliminated the “h”… but then I’d not have the “n” in play, and I think I’d have gone for either JAZZY or DADDY.

My starter gave three letters - but that gave me more word possibilities than I like. I wanted to eliminate S, L, N, D, K, F, M, B… but focused on the most informative ones to narrow down my search.

It could still have been STEAK or SWEAT.

I resisted the urge to guess 3R on the 2nd row - and just as well. I’d have got it wrong.

Instead, an eliminator ruled out not only my initial suspect, but gave me 2R and the suspect alternative, as well as setting me on the path to solving the remaining words with nary a check.

So many possibles shuffled within the semi-darkness of a jostle-shot fog of letters after my eliminator. I made my guess with “handy” because this would at least bring down that number and it might be the answer.

Well… it was.


As I played the word, I was thinking “I’ve tried that recently.” In Octordle 971, 2-3 days ago, I wrongly guessed “handy” instead of “dandy”.
