WORDLE - anyone else trying the daily online word game?

I recently stumbled across WORDLE online.  For the uninitiated, it is a daily word guessing game where you have to try to guess the word in 6 or less tries.

This, from Wikipedia, explains the game:

Every day, a five-letter word is chosen which players aim to guess within six tries. After every guess, each letter is marked as either green, yellow or gray: green indicates that letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means it is in the answer but not in the right position, while gray indicates it is not in the answer at all. The game has a "hard mode" option, which requires players to include letters marked as green and yellow in subsequent guesses. The daily word is the same for everyone. The game also has a dark mode as well as a high-contrast theme for colourblind accessibility, which changes the color scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue.

This abc news story has some tips for playing:

I have found that most that most days I can get the daily word in 5 tries or less (mostly 5 though).  Interestingly, there is a spinoff of WORDLE called LEWDLE, where the words are lewd, or naughty, words.  I have better success with LEWDLE than I do with WORDLE . . . getting the word in just 2 or 3 attempts.  Not sure what that says about my private school education 🤣

How to play?

For wordle:

To play Wordle, follow these steps:
  • Objective: Guess a five-letter word within six attempts.
  • Gameplay:
  1. Start with a blank grid of five squares.
  2. Type any five-letter word and press Enter.
  3. After each guess, the game provides feedback using colored squares:
  • Green indicates a correct letter in the right position.
  • Yellow indicates a correct letter in the wrong position.
  • Gray indicates a letter not in the word.
    --------------------------
Probably the best way to learn to play is to have a go.
Don't worry about right or wrong at this stage, just concentrate on seeing how it works.
The version we are playing is from NY times.
    Here:

Probably the best way to start is to choose a 5 letter word that has a few letters that are fairly common. Countess often chooses trace, I often start with alien.  Another boardie likes adieu.
It really doesn't matter too much what word you choose as long as it has a reasonable spread of letters.
Then press enter and the system will colour in the letters.
With any luck, you will score one or two greens or yellows.

It is probably your second guess that can make a big difference. Again, unless you are pretty sure of the answer, it's probably best to go with another word that will cut down the choices. Have a look at what you got in the first word and see if you can figure out any possible answers. Sometimes you can think of lots.
Then try a word (we call it an eliminator) that might help narrow it down.

Countess is our resident champion at doing this, whereas I often choose shout, just because it covers the rest of the vowels plus SHT.

But you just continue till you feel confident enough to take a guess.
I got lucky today with my game.

Spoiler
I started with alien and what a dud that was!
shout was a lot better.
I was about to go with another eliminator (probably pricy) but thought-what could it possibly be though, maybe I can come up with a better eliminator?
Everything I could think of was not possible eg stood, swoon
All I could come up with was sword.
After I got it, I thought-hang on, now I can think of swoop or scoff. So I got lucky today!

Now this game was annoying in the extreme.

After my first turn, I fancied avian for #5 and was tempted to just try. Thank goodness I held back.

I am SO annoyed though. I got #1 venue & I was looking at #6, thinking, I am so glad the V has been exposed on venue as I would have been  inclined to try envoy here otherwise. Wonder what it could be?
Oh of course, must be enjoy. Lucky I dodged envoy.

I was feeling so pleased with myself, only to press enter and find I had typed envoy, after all of that!
So annoyed!!!

After my previous game & the self inflicted injury, the fates smiled on me.

Spoiler
19 ex.jpgIt felt like light pickings after my first turn but it was a real pelasure to see SHOUT romp home on the second turn.😁
I feel though that quite a few of the wordsare getting a bit old-oaken, opera.
They should use shout more often and I don't think alien or trace have had a fair run either.
