WORDLE - anyone else trying the daily online word game?

I recently stumbled across WORDLE online.  For the uninitiated, it is a daily word guessing game where you have to try to guess the word in 6 or less tries.

https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/

This, from Wikipedia, explains the game:

Every day, a five-letter word is chosen which players aim to guess within six tries. After every guess, each letter is marked as either green, yellow or gray: green indicates that letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means it is in the answer but not in the right position, while gray indicates it is not in the answer at all. The game has a "hard mode" option, which requires players to include letters marked as green and yellow in subsequent guesses. The daily word is the same for everyone. The game also has a dark mode as well as a high-contrast theme for colourblind accessibility, which changes the color scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue.

This abc news story has some tips for playing:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-26/why-wordle-has-become-a-new-online-obsession/100782794

I have found that most that most days I can get the daily word in 5 tries or less (mostly 5 though).  Interestingly, there is a spinoff of WORDLE called LEWDLE, where the words are lewd, or naughty, words.  I have better success with LEWDLE than I do with WORDLE . . . getting the word in just 2 or 3 attempts.  Not sure what that says about my private school education 🤣

Then I knew N would be in 4th spot and 3rd spot would be O or U.
I went for scout for second word, which was probably not the best but I thought at least it would cover more than H would.

Somewhat annoying. Disappointing. I got off to a good start, solving on my second turn.

I was tempted to solve #1 on turn 3 as hotel is the first word that occurred to me, but it could have been eg towel or steel.

Spoiler
24 cl.jpgI felt I needed another eliminator half way through and used dumpy as I was stuck on #8, maybe stuff/stump/stuck and #7 drown (which I thought likely) or brown, frown.

24 e3x.jpg4th turn was a risk (brush or crush). I almost went crush.
#7 had me beat till towards the end as my first thought was carat but then C was eliminated.
There was nothing else it could be, by then, except karat.

I went a bit rogue on this one.
After turn 1, I had my doubts the answer would contain another vowel. I considered maybe using spout or scout, but instead opted for space on the basis it had a few new letters plus might help with the e placement.

25 cl.jpgI am convinced some of this game is learned behaviour. I looked at #3 just before turn 5 and thought-not again, I bet it is that abominable word, Howdy, that they love.

#1 was a guess, after I gave up waiting for a C or M elsewhere to sort it out.

The score might look the same but I found this one took me longer, quite a bit longer to sort it out.

I always feel the pressure to see if I can solve something by turn 3 or I know the score will be atrocious.
All I could come up with was soupy but I didn't think I had much hope. So that was a good moment.
It took me ages to work out #2 as I figured it was probably SA with a 2/4 vowel pattern, but it pays to think like an American, I guess.

🟩🟩 DUMPS <- eliminator

🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 DRAPE 🎯

After the starter, it could have been brake brave drape drake frame grade grape grave graze erase. I contemplated using gymps, but decided instead to employ dumps. My eliminator would at its worst reduce the 10 possibilities to 4 (brake, brave, grave, graze), but if the solution were any of the other 6 words, I’d have the patterns uniquely identified.

As it turned out, g__g_ was the resulting pattern. I was locked in and firing: done!

Had I used gymps (my first thought):

brake _____

brave _____

drape ___g_

drake _____

frame __y__

grade g____

grape g__g_

grave g____

graze g____

erase ___y_

This would mean worst outcome of one in three (brake, brave, drake), or another group of one in three (grade, grace, graze), with four unique patterns giving a certain ruling for only four of the possibilities. Hmmm.

(Actually, I’d still have got the answer after row 2, but with lower odds.)

Using dumps:

brake _____

brave _____

drape g__g_

drake g____

frame ___y_

grade y____

grape ___g_

grave _____

graze _____

erase ____y

Better to use dumps.
