WORDLE - anyone else trying the daily online word game?

I recently stumbled across WORDLE online.  For the uninitiated, it is a daily word guessing game where you have to try to guess the word in 6 or less tries.

https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/

This, from Wikipedia, explains the game:

Every day, a five-letter word is chosen which players aim to guess within six tries. After every guess, each letter is marked as either green, yellow or gray: green indicates that letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means it is in the answer but not in the right position, while gray indicates it is not in the answer at all. The game has a "hard mode" option, which requires players to include letters marked as green and yellow in subsequent guesses. The daily word is the same for everyone. The game also has a dark mode as well as a high-contrast theme for colourblind accessibility, which changes the color scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wordle

This abc news story has some tips for playing:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-26/why-wordle-has-become-a-new-online-obsession/100782794

I have found that most that most days I can get the daily word in 5 tries or less (mostly 5 though).  Interestingly, there is a spinoff of WORDLE called LEWDLE, where the words are lewd, or naughty, words.  I have better success with LEWDLE than I do with WORDLE . . . getting the word in just 2 or 3 attempts.  Not sure what that says about my private school education ๐Ÿคฃ

I was able to get down towards the end without dramas but then I got stuck.

For some reason, #7 wasn't ringing any bells, though in hindsight it is obvious.

And #3 was between 2 words.

So I used an eliminator and that solved things.

Most annoying. I could have played this better, I solved in the wrong order. Had I changed things slightly, my score would have been better. Not much better, mind you, but perhaps 59 or 60.

These things are sent to try us (or me, anyway)๐Ÿ˜‚

I am convinced the puzzle makers have a little list of words where the letters can be rearranged to make 2 or 3 different words, or where there are half a dozen different words that can be made just by changing one letter.

Spoiler
18 ex.pngI was going okay till just after solving #2. Even that felt risky (terra/tetra).
But the others, I wasn't seeing any clear way forward.
#4 blown or flown
#5 bower or rower
#8 (and this is where I made my tactical error) topic or optic

But straight after I solved terra, #8 pathway was cleat, but I never noticed as I was concentrating on the others and decided to try bower as I figured it would be handy in any case to expose the B, as well as being a 50-50 chance.
So-always going to have made that mistake but it should have come after optic.

Taking two risky guesses at the start was the fuel for this Octordle. The first guess was reasonable enough - a 1 in 2 chance of being right. But that second guess was wild! It was all gut instinct.

After that, I definitely needed an eliminator. That gave me vitalโ€ฆ and the lack of a V in 3L meant it must be fault, which in turn gave me 2R (fight).

1R could only be awful. The sparse-looking 4L - with only yellow Cs and Os and As - must surely be cocoaโ€ฆ and so it was.

By this time, 1L could only be sprig.

4R - Iโ€™ve not seen Octordle employ dicot or picot or ontic, and I gauge these to be unlikely. I suppose you could say that this was a sure thingโ€ฆ but my assumption regarding likelihood could well have been wrong.

3R - [male contribution to a baby] was very unlikely; I ruled it out. Gut instinct said seedy. Sense or seven would have been more logical in that theyโ€™d narrow down words if my guess were wrong, but I stubbornly played my gut-driven guess.

1R - I donโ€™t think Iโ€™ve seen tetra in play; I judged it to be unlikely but I could have been mistaken.

3L - both rower and rover were equally likely. I actually entered R O V before I changed my mind and back-keyed to make it rower. Sheer luck.

2R - Thanks to the last-second change of mind to rower, I had the W for this. It was still a 1-in-2 and I had to guess.

4L - Iโ€™d suspected that this was minus, but with only a yellow I and yellow S, it seemed prudent to see whether any other letters could be uncoveredโ€ฆ With N now confirmed, I was sure.

2L - Finally I could also be sure that this was steak. Iโ€™d held back while stead and then steam were eliminated from consideration.

This was insanely difficult. I agree with you; Octordle has a store of words which could use this or that letter, deliberately to fool or taunt us.

#5 โ€ฆ I think you may possibly have missed the double R revealed by TERRA? #5 couldnโ€™t have been bowerโ€ฆ but it could have been rover/rower (which I also faced). Your dilemma would still have been there - two 1-in-2 risks.
