WORDLE - anyone else trying the daily online word game?

I recently stumbled across WORDLE online.  For the uninitiated, it is a daily word guessing game where you have to try to guess the word in 6 or less tries.

https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/

This, from Wikipedia, explains the game:

Every day, a five-letter word is chosen which players aim to guess within six tries. After every guess, each letter is marked as either green, yellow or gray: green indicates that letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means it is in the answer but not in the right position, while gray indicates it is not in the answer at all. The game has a "hard mode" option, which requires players to include letters marked as green and yellow in subsequent guesses. The daily word is the same for everyone. The game also has a dark mode as well as a high-contrast theme for colourblind accessibility, which changes the color scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue.

This abc news story has some tips for playing:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-26/why-wordle-has-become-a-new-online-obsession/100782794

I have found that most that most days I can get the daily word in 5 tries or less (mostly 5 though).  Interestingly, there is a spinoff of WORDLE called LEWDLE, where the words are lewd, or naughty, words.  I have better success with LEWDLE than I do with WORDLE . . . getting the word in just 2 or 3 attempts.  Not sure what that says about my private school education 🤣

The eliminator was very helpful… It’s just that I hadn’t an S or a U, which would have been lovely. By the time I got to my 8th row/guess, even though I had two letters (yellow) revealed for 3R, and only one green I in 3rd position for 2L, and either wince or since for 4R, 3R was by far the worst option to attempt. Too many possible answers.

2L was quiff, quill, shill. I doubted that slish would even be in consideration (obsolete). The sensible obvious thing to do would be to play since for 4R and hope it ruled S in or out for 2L. I didn’t feel like doing that; I just didn’t feel that since was the answer.

(If it wasn't, then 4R would have bombed, and 2L would still be 1 in 2, and 3R would still have 6 possible answers.)

It would be good to rule U in or out for 3R; that would really narrow it down.

So… I played a 1-in-3, quill. To my relief, it was correct.

It also ruled out L and ruled in U for 3R. I was pleased to see that this left, in fact, only one remaining solution for 3R: surer.

Aha! And that ruled out S for 4R!

Ah, it is funny you used bipod as eliminator as I was thinking of that word myself in wordle this morning, although in the end, I never used it.

This eliminator being accepted as a word in Octordle astonished me! I tried it out but was prepared for rejection. It’s an obsolete form of “vialled” (as in a liquid’s being placed/held in a vial), and I know it from Milton’s masque, “Comus”.

Helping all urchin blasts, and ill lucke signes / That the shrewd medling elfe delights to make, / Which she [a maiden called Sabrina, saved from a raging flood by nymphs, and transformed into the river’s goddess] with precious viold liquors heales.

All fine until 4L. I ruled out douma as Russian historical council or modern-day assembly is probably not an Octordle thing. I nearly went for vodka (I’d also contemplated it yesterday).

At the same time I couldn’t go forward with 4R (breed, freer, greed), or with 1L (broke, froze).

I decided that I just had to bite the bullet and make a guess for 4L. If I could the presence or absence of G, I’d at least be a step closer …

It was dogma. That also gave me 2R (guile), and of course 4R (greed).

Final Abyss of Choice - 1L. It was still broke/froze. A thousand curses upon it: I chose the wrong one.

It’s such an irony that the all-important letter which my weird eliminator uncovered just fell naturally into your lap. It’s the luck of the tiles…but I didn’t have the spread-or-instrument dilemma as my eliminator ruled out the L being in 4th position… Luck is always going to play its part. 🤞🧩
