I recently stumbled across WORDLE online. For the uninitiated, it is a daily word guessing game where you have to try to guess the word in 6 or less tries.
https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/
This, from Wikipedia, explains the game:
Every day, a five-letter word is chosen which players aim to guess within six tries. After every guess, each letter is marked as either green, yellow or gray: green indicates that letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means it is in the answer but not in the right position, while gray indicates it is not in the answer at all. The game has a "hard mode" option, which requires players to include letters marked as green and yellow in subsequent guesses. The daily word is the same for everyone. The game also has a dark mode as well as a high-contrast theme for colourblind accessibility, which changes the color scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue.

I have found that most that most days I can get the daily word in 5 tries or less (mostly 5 though). Interestingly, there is a spinoff of WORDLE called LEWDLE, where the words are lewd, or naughty, words. I have better success with LEWDLE than I do with WORDLE . . . getting the word in just 2 or 3 attempts. Not sure what that says about my private school education 🤣

The shape seemed to shimmer in the fog of letter-possibilities; if I assumed one possibility for the first two letters, I could see one likely set of final two letters, but if I assumed the other possibilities for the first two letters, I had a few more letters to rule in or out.
I decided on a word that would rule out final two letters and determine the first two letters. It was effective.

I had one 50/50 which would have resulted in an extra row. Apart from that, this Octordle unfolded like a Japanese fan.

SpoilerOnce I knew the S was eliminated, that made a CH start likely & with A, L, I could not see what else it could be but chalk.
Exactly.

Spoiler#1, I was originally thinking nanny or canny, for sure, or maybe manky. #3, all I could think of for ages was ebony and then envoy but I could see it could not be either of those. Once I thought of envoy though, the answer came to me.
======================
Yes, the “no, it can’t be envoy” led immediately to “enjoy”! And for 1L, knowing it had to include the G was a good limiter for me.
55 is still a fine score. (Rest of my comments are in the spoiler.) So much depends on the eliminator chosen … It is luck as well as skill.

Although my first turn might look like I hit a jackpot, I actually sat there and figured out about 20 words it could be. None of them involved an extra vowel or the letter H, so I abandoned my usual second word and went with a different eliminator.
I found it quite helpful but I still had several possible answers left so i went for yet another eliminator
which did the trick. It cut out all but one word on my list, so I went for it.

Shades of yesterrday!
I distinctly remember sitting here yesterday and pondering over nanny/canny/manky and the answer ended up being mangy.
Today canny wasn't on the list and I felt I could also swipe mangy off as unlikely, 2 days in a row.
So nanny was a firm fav from early on.
I could so easily have dipped out on a couple of these today, I was lucky to get through. Sometimes it is impossible (for me) to know what the answer is till I have a go.

Spoiler#7 had me worried.
Drool or droll. Absolutely no way to know for sure so I had to plunge in. Luckily. I got it right.
#5 was almost the undoing of me as I made a couple of mistakes on it.
The first was water. I thought that would be the most likely answer as I hade the TE placement and could figure out where my extra yellows A &R most likely went.
Well, that didn't do so well for me, so later I tried dater. Nope. Couldn't think what on earth it could be then, rater, tater, eater? Lucky to get that one... eventually
For your #5, you didn’t spot the double appearance from your #8? (My 4R) That’s what gave it away to me… but I do think it’s a tricky manoeuvre on Octordle’s part.
Your #7 (my 4L) - yes, I just ignored that possibility. Pure gut feeling. It is another trick spot.
