WORDLE - anyone else trying the daily online word game?

I recently stumbled across WORDLE online.  For the uninitiated, it is a daily word guessing game where you have to try to guess the word in 6 or less tries.

https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/

This, from Wikipedia, explains the game:

Every day, a five-letter word is chosen which players aim to guess within six tries. After every guess, each letter is marked as either green, yellow or gray: green indicates that letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means it is in the answer but not in the right position, while gray indicates it is not in the answer at all. The game has a "hard mode" option, which requires players to include letters marked as green and yellow in subsequent guesses. The daily word is the same for everyone. The game also has a dark mode as well as a high-contrast theme for colourblind accessibility, which changes the color scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue.

This abc news story has some tips for playing:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-26/why-wordle-has-become-a-new-online-obsession/100782794

I have found that most that most days I can get the daily word in 5 tries or less (mostly 5 though).  Interestingly, there is a spinoff of WORDLE called LEWDLE, where the words are lewd, or naughty, words.  I have better success with LEWDLE than I do with WORDLE . . . getting the word in just 2 or 3 attempts.  Not sure what that says about my private school education 🤣

This was an odd game in that after my first turn I thought I was doomed and after my second turn, I didn't feel much better.

I zoomed in on #5 as I had 4 exposed letters and I thought, "Surely I can come up with at least one possibility?"

So.. a slow start with the first answers dragged out of me.

2 ex.jpgBy turn 5, I was back where I started, feeling doomed to an early extra eliminator till I noticed the Y in #6 was not at the end.
The last word (#3), all I could think of was vulva but could see it couldn't be. I suspected U was the starting letter so got there evenutally.
Was surprised I did better at this one than the classic as it didn't feel as easy.

It could have been gaunt, haunt, jaunt, vaunt. I’d considered using hadji as a second eliminator, but I’d still be left with two possible answers. Risky guess made instead.

I did think of vaunt too but decided it was not as likely.

Never thought of gaunt and jaunt, don't know why. I really was worried it would be taunt though.

Oh well, blissful ignorance today.😂

I knew - with the utmost loathing - that 3R was “wooly”. But first, I punished that panel by leaving it until last.

Exactly so. I do this sometimes. And wooly deserved to be punished, it is an abomination, as you said!

Maybe more. fudgy or pricy next? (I couldn't think of an eliminator with everything). Went with pricy, it put me on the right track, had not thought of lumpy at all till then.

This really had me stumped at first.

Spoiler
3 cl.jpgI had 4 letters for #2 and suspected _uite, but it couldn't be suite.  It couldn't be utile either. I went through the keyboard once and nothing made sense, till I realised I had overlooked Q.
Lucky I got it as I had not thought of squat for #8 till then.

But as you can see, I used an eliminator half way through (pricy) then got #1 wrong at the end. I really thought I was on to something with prior. Never mind.

It seemed as if solving one led smoothly to the next as it usuallt involved uncovering at least one new letter.
Strangely enough, I really fancied freak for #1 quite early on, but it could have been several other things, so i held back.
Probably the hardest one for me was #5, till I decided that it was unlikely to be anything starting with BA. After that, Y was the only letter left that made sense in second spot.

The order of solving was a major factor. Once I solved 4R (mouth), 2R (lumen) was right there. That in turn gave me 2L (blunt). Following on from that, 1L had the letter B ruled out, so that the only two remaining choices were freak and wreak, and luck waded in to help me make the correct guess.

2L also gave the solution for 3R. I’d been all set to play coven, but covey was also possible; with 2L ruling out the N, it was clearly not coven.

And finally, the yellow Y from covey solved 3L; prior to that; I’d probably have tried basal.
