WORDLE - anyone else trying the daily online word game?

I recently stumbled across WORDLE online.  For the uninitiated, it is a daily word guessing game where you have to try to guess the word in 6 or less tries.

https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/

This, from Wikipedia, explains the game:

Every day, a five-letter word is chosen which players aim to guess within six tries. After every guess, each letter is marked as either green, yellow or gray: green indicates that letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means it is in the answer but not in the right position, while gray indicates it is not in the answer at all. The game has a "hard mode" option, which requires players to include letters marked as green and yellow in subsequent guesses. The daily word is the same for everyone. The game also has a dark mode as well as a high-contrast theme for colourblind accessibility, which changes the color scheme from green and yellow to orange and blue.

This abc news story has some tips for playing:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-26/why-wordle-has-become-a-new-online-obsession/100782794

I have found that most that most days I can get the daily word in 5 tries or less (mostly 5 though).  Interestingly, there is a spinoff of WORDLE called LEWDLE, where the words are lewd, or naughty, words.  I have better success with LEWDLE than I do with WORDLE . . . getting the word in just 2 or 3 attempts.  Not sure what that says about my private school education 🤣

With my final word, I was faced with two possible letters - one more usual, one less usual. I made a guess.

Starter: TRACE.

Eliminator: HOING.

CATER, then HOING.

I was able to guess the RH word without any further ado, but I took longer over the LH word because I didn’t want it to be what it was. Abbreviation! Grrr!

I had some possibilities in mind after turn 2 and used another eliminator which helped but I chose the wrong word to go with.

Not a hard one, I completed it without any major headaches, it is just I didn't start solving till turn 4 and needed another eliminator lower down.

I uh-ohed when I saw that one solitary little green tile in the 1st row. This wasn’t a good start.

The eliminator was actually amazingly helpful. I knew where the yellow letter had to go, and that dictated everything else about the solution.

BINGO
BUGLE

The G could only go in 3rd place, which meant there had to be a vowel (either another E or a U) between B and G. There was no BEG_E to fit, so it was going to be BUG_ E… only one possible answer. 🎺

I had a 50/50 chance of guessing 3L on the 2nd row, and I was lucky. I could also make a confident guess at 3R.

But then I was in a wilderness of blank tiles. I needed to use an eliminator. It wasn’t the best eliminator I could have chosen… but I did manage to scrape through and guess 2L.

1L could then be guessed with a bit of inspiration, and 2R popped into place as well. 4L was now obvious, 1R could only have been one of two possibilities (and one of those is an Octordle favourite), and there was nothing else really left for 4L but the answer.

TRACE was not kind to me.

The weird thing with today’s eliminator is that I almost played one that differed by only one letter from the answer. The eliminator I actually used required me to guess (and the field was far more open)… and it was cynicism and luck that gave me the answer.

DINGY
DOLLY

My nearly-used eliminator was DOILY. Well, I say nearly-used… I was also considering SPOIL, DOUGH, LOUGH and POUND.

With DINGY, it could have been DUMPY, DULLY, DUSKY, DOWDY, DODGY, DOWNY - for the most obvious ones. But it would be just like Wordle to use double letters… and a long-time favourite for Wordle is “dolly”. So… I took a risky guess.
