Cat Cafe Melbourne is Australia’s first cat cafe!
We will offer a whole new social environment never before experienced in Australia.
We will provide a fun, comfortable, and most importantly, kitty filled space for you to relax and play with several lovely cats from rescue shelters.
The cats will live at the premises, therefore they will have everything they could possibly ever need right at their paw-tips.
Cat Cafe’s are becoming known world wide, the first opening in Taiwan in 1998, and since spreading to Japan, Vienna, Russia, Germany, China, Thailand, the UK, France, and more!
The success of Cat Cafes is due to several reasons, the main one being that cats are awesome.
In city centres it can be difficult to rent a flat that allows animals, and owning an animal for its entire life is a big responsibility and costly, therefore Cat Cafes are a great solution to these problems.
It has also been proven that interacting with cats can lower high blood pressure, stress, and anxiety.
I'd love to go there! Might keep an eye out for a weekend flight and accommodation package bargain and fly down for a bit of retail therapy and and kitteh interaction.

Lealta, my sister volunteers for a no kill shelter also. She actually drives to shelters that are going to be euthanizing dogs and then takes them back to the no kill shelter were they then find foster families to take them in until adopted. I don't know how she does it as she teaches full time and helps me take care of our folks. I really admire your brother for volunteering his time like that. If he is in San Diego also, it would be funny if they knew each other.
As for the cat cafe....I think that it offers more of a chance for adoption than maybe a regular shelter would. In that people who may not have been thinking of adopting and who wouldn't have been visiting a shelter, might fall in love with one of these kitties and decide to take one home. They are available for adoption, right?

"Can I adopt a cat from the cafe? No, the cats are not up for adoption. The cats will live at the premises permanently. We believe it would not be fair on the cats to move them from a shelter, to the cat cafe, and then on again to another home. It would be very stressful for the cats. It would also be difficult to continuously find new cats that are suitable in personality, and it would create health risks for the cats, bringing in new cats all the time. There are also other boring legal reasons regarding an adoption centre with a cafe in the same premises that I won’t go into! If we wanted to adopt the cats there is a good chance the city council would never let us open. Cat Cafe Melbourne will be promoting adoption through shelters as this is their profession and can answer any questions regarding adoptions."

edit (Sorry bluecat - this is not in answer to you)
I'm not knocking the idea. It's just that cat's like to sleep all day and they won't let you touch them when they're sleeping.
I have been misquoted, people. When I said 'they' - I didn't mean the cats. That's a stupid statement!
The 'they' that I referred to was the owners of the cafe!!
Re-phrased - The owners of the cafe won't let you touch the cats when they're sleeping!!!!!! It's on the web page! Am I the ony one that actually read it?
Are we good now?

being known as a crazy cat lady I would love this place
I only have two cats but love them to bits and life would not be the same without them

Yes I gathered that from their site too - if the cats are sleeping leave them alone.
That's a good idea about volunteering at a shelter (a post above) as it breaks my heart to see cats and dogs in those
cages but at least they are safe and hopefully will get to be rehomed though I believe dogs are more likely to get a home than cats.

I read that the cats are kept in a special room overnight. Going by their facebook page, those cats look very happy and well cared for.
