I am amazed and disgusted that in all the indignation over what Gillian Triggs should or shouldn't have done or who said or didn't say what to her, not ONE SINGLE POLITICIAN except, finally, Malcolm Turnbull, has commented in any way on the contents of her report..
She found that over a 15-month period from January 2013 to March 2014, spanning both the Labor and Coalition governments there were 233 recorded assaults involving children and 33 incidents of reported sexual assault.
If these findings are true - and as far as I know nobody has so far disputed them - then what is going to be done about it? Who had the duty of care? who is going to be held responsible. What measures are going to be put in place to stop this abuse happening in future?
Both Gillian Triggs and George Brandis are astute and comparitively wealthy adults able to instruct top legal practitioners to protect their reputaions - but who is going to protect the safety of these children? How many more children have been abused since March 2014? Is a child perhaps being abused in a detention centre even while you are reading this post?
Surely to goodness after all that was learned from the Children In Care Royal Commission this report cannot simply be put in a "don't want to know" basket while both sides of Pariament try to gain political mileage out the motives of the Human Rghts Commissioner or the behaviour of the Attourney General.
At some point -though probably not in the lifetime of this government or even the one that follows it - there will inevitably be a Royal Commission into the treatment of children in detention centre. what do you imagine its findings are likely to be?

Agree, but even when reported to authorities, they have buried it, the BBC preferring that to rocking the boat with Jimmy Saville
Or the Labor Rotherham Council ( and other councils plus the Police not wanting to address the issues because the perps were Black Pakistanis. And even Maggie Thatcher covering up.
The culture of abuse needs to stop BUT political correctness needs to be thrown out the window and where needed,
Be offensive to people and confront them.
People are scared to address the issue.
I agree but its all very well to bring all children in situations in the wider community and all situations to highlight social problems. We have in place many agencies and NGO's and govt. agencies already.
The topic is children in detention and why Triggs felt the need to target them now rather than when there were many hundreds in detention and many many dying at sea.

My post was about the topic which is: Triggs using children in detention to further her own aganda against a conservative govt.
She consulted 2 Labor ministers before the election regarding when was an opportune time to unleash her inquiry and guess what, they told her "after the election would be great thanks".
She did not consult with 2 Conservative ministers before the election did she? what stopped her? it would have ruined her political stitch up, her witch hunt.

No, that is not the topic at all.
And no, you do not speak any truth about Triggs at all either.
Listen to the evidence she gave. Professor Triggs explained very clearly about the timing of the review and the reasons it was upgraded to an inquiry right at the beginning of the hearing I posted the link to.
What do you think of the committee chairperson making jokes and interjecting all the time?
Rather disrespectful way to treat the job he is paid good money for.
Do you think a person should read the report before declaring it to be partisan?
How can a person give an honest assessment of a report without reading it first?

No. the topic is the abuse of children in detention - as described in the report - and the need for justice for them. The issues of why they were there, why the report was not made earlier and how many died at sea are doubtless worthy of discussion, and it might be well worth your while starting a thread to discuss them, but they are completely separate issues and not the topic of this thread.

Read the OP. that is NOT the topic.

No, only someone who did not listen to what she said would accuse her of any partisan motives.
She clearly explained the how, the why and explained the work planning process they are obligated to follow.
She answered all questions with honesty and respect in clear concise english, while the man child chairperson failed to do his job.

She lied and obfuscated, told complete lies and was caught out for it. She has manipulated and lied all the way through this witch hunt.
She lied about the timing, she lied about the 2 labor ministers she canvassed, she lied about self harm and suicide attempts and she lied about armed guards. That's just a few of the lies we know about.
She is a total liar lying to save her skin. You can rush to her defence but she has damaged the HRC irrevocably, has been told so by her colleagues and has been implored by same colleagues to resign for the sake of the Commission.
She is totally discredited by her own actions.
