What a way to motivate, not

HE CERTAINLY doesn’t beat around the bush.

The head of the Australian Medical Association Queensland (AMAQ) has slammed residents of the Sunshine State, saying they’re too fat and drink too much, as the group lobbies for health reforms ahead of the state election later this month.

Dr Rudd also said unhealthy meals at school tuckshops should also be scrapped to prevent the next generation developing poor diet habits.

“The school tuckshops are supposed to be healthy places, but the reality is, they (aren’t).”

“We’ve all seen tuckshop ladies and there’s a reason why they’ve got tuckshop arms.”

Apart from being too fat, Queenslanders also drank too much, Dr Rudd said.

He has since apologised for the "tuckshop arms" remark.

No, its parents not being strict enough with the kids.

Or just buying heaps of drink, if you provide it, kids will drink it.

Re: What a way to motivate, not

40 odd years ago I had to see my GP because I felt I was run down and needed some kind of tonic.

At that time I had nine children to care for, plus my husband, my parents and my husbands parents who all lived about 2Km from our home. I had to walk everywhere as we did not have a car. In emergencies or bad weather I would take a Taxi. Besides we had a very large garden that I loved working in at every spare moment.

Doctor sent me for some tests and a few days later he declared that I was diabetic. It scared me, because one of my Grandmothers was insulin dependant for many years. When I asked the Doctor what he can do to help me, he said; "Nothing I will do, you have to loose wheight first before anything else."

When he put me on the scales, I was 16stone. (don't know how much in Kg) He told me to get down to 9½ stone in 12 month. I was upset and told him that I hardly ate anything all day, but I got fat and fatter without having an explanation. Our GP knew my family, so he asked me what I ate for breakfast and said at the same time;"Don't tell me, you eat nothing, and the same goes for lunch, then in the evening, when everyone is home you cook a big meal and eat a good potion bcause you are hungry. Then you sit down in front of the TV, have a cuppa and some nibbles and go to bed, for your body to turn all that food into fat."

He told me to eat a decent breakfast every morning, a medium sized lunch and very little at dinner time and no snacks at night. I did as he told me and was not even hungry when I fed the family. After 12 month I was down to 10 stone and my glucose level was normal.

I have since maintained a healthy wheight. It was not the lack of excercise that I got fat. I was eating the wrong way and instead of burning fat, I conseved it by being sedentary after eating a big meal.

There are lots of people who will say the same; "I hardly eat anything!" But at what time of the day are they eating? Not everyone that is overwheight is living on junk food and soft drinks. Doctors should talk to people and advise them, instead of just telling them to excercise.

Spot on re soft drinks.

Water, milk, cordial if you have to but fizzy drinks at school tuck shops ?

Many schools ban these from sale at the school canteen now, they have 'healthy eating' programs and limit or ban 'junk foods'.

The school my children went to had a no soft drinks policy (last one left school 6 years ago). One kid used to sell cans of coke out of his locker to get around that!

If a Doctor is blunt and tells an overweight/obese patient  - you are too fat, lose weight or you will suffer an early death... then that person is likely to get upset, walk out and go home and stuff some more food in.

The tuckshop ladies with tuckshop arms comment was dumb because it doesn't even apply to people who work in school canteens.

It is lot more complicated, and what worked for you may not work for others, especially if they do eat junk food.

Some years ago I sold pup; and about 7 months later the owner contacted me a said that she is very worried about the dog because it is getting too fat.  My 9 months old pups are usually very active and hard to keep on weight required for show condition; so I raced over there thinking "cushing's disease" or some other nasty illness.  The owner told me she feeds just tiny little bit (walnut size) of fresh meat and small bowl of dry food.  When I arrived I found 2 kids each wider than high, sitting in front of TV, and having "little" picnic = about 1/2 dozen of dishes filled with crisps, cheesos, sweet biscuits etc, and the dog sitting with them and being fed this rubbish.  It was decided that the kids must stop feeding the dog, but when after 2 months of supposedly not being given any rubbish the dog was even fatter, I took her back.  Within 4 week with me and being fed the same as my dogs (no diet or anything), she was as lean and fit as they were.

I think that the problem is that eating little snacks people lose track of what they eat.  It becomes a habit.  An yes some people have faster metabolism than others.  But in the end people have to take responsibility for their own health.

Yeah those easily offended probably, and those that are always looking for an excuse to justify their gluttony.

Anyone with a bit of commonsense would see it as a wake-up call.

How many tuckshop ladies do you know? Every single one in Australia? To some it does apply.

Re: What a way to motivate, not

First names and location of the school canteen please, for these women you know that work in tuck shops and have tuck shop arms.

The man that said that, knows it was wrong (he was out of order making that comment), and has apologised for saying it. No need to stick up for him.

It was a gross generalisation, same as, for example, stating all receptionists have big posteriors (because the nature of their job they sit down all day), or everyone that works in fast food outlets are obese.

Just heard an interview with him and he is still apologising.  I doubt that his wife works at the school tuckshop.

In the same interview was a tuckshop convenor who said they are always desperately short of volunteers because nowadays more food has to be prepared than in the past.  She mentioned salads, sushi rolls, stir fry.

As Glee said  ^^^^^^^^^^^^  back there, the problem does not lie with school tuckshops and probably never did.
