Being seduced by an older woman is seen as a young man's fantasy, but it is sexual abuse. Ian Munro asks whether female offenders get off too lightly.
HE IS a teenage boy, a student at a Hobart secondary college and one of the victims of Sarah Jane Vercoe, secondary teacher and sexual predator. By some perceptions he has lived a great adolescent male sexual fantasy: seduced by an attractive, sexually experienced older woman. But by his mother's account, as given to Tasmanian ABC television, he has been hurt, perhaps irreparably.
"It's had a huge impact. He's moody, very moody. He stays most of the time in his bedroom, comes out for his meals, goes back in and watches TV in his room."
Vercoe, then 24, had been conducting a sexual relationship with one of her students for six months when four other boys asked her for a lift home from a basketball game at Dodges Ferry, east of Hobart. They stopped on the way at a McDonald's and to buy alcohol, and she instead took them to her home after suggesting the group have an orgy.
