What's the first thing that goes thru your mind when someone tells you they work in the adult industry?

Do people usually tell you that, though?
I haven't really met many people who do or who own up to it anyway.
I only know one woman who does & she works on phone bookings/reception at a brothel. Has done for years. She's in her 70s and no, has never worked on the other side of the desk.
Probably many of the workers in this industry are just normal people, trying to pay their bills.
Her report is that every single prostitute that works there though has problems. Often that problem can be drugs, but they all have problems and it isn't like a normal workplace, you need to lock your handbag away at all times. You might think the women would be wealthy but usually they are not, they are struggling.
This woman reports that probably one of the main virtues she has to have is discretion and the ability to pretend she doesn't recognise clients outside of the building.
Oh and probably first thing I think of is risk. I think it is an industry that carries some degree of risk & there is some criminal association with it.
I only know of two people who have worked in the adult industry. Both where very young and had MAJOR problems, not of their making. They where exploited by the industry.
They certainly didn't run around telling others what they did for money. It wasn't a badge of honour. While the industry does have a role to play in giving some very lonely people the opportunity to experience some form of intimacy, the whole sex industry seems pretty exploitive to me. Not a fan at all.

I had a friend who was a hooker.
She hired me as her driver, paid well, and tried to bend me to her world view. I didn't subscribe to it, but the money was good, she was a nice person (outside of her issues) and it suited both of us to have a non-judgemental person in the friendship.
She did have issues, and left town without explanation, which did hurt.

Seems to be a common theme coming through the threads. While i,m sure there are some sex workers who enter the industry with a cool head and clear eyes, it seems the vast majority of sex workers have issues of one sort or another. Often substance abuse, poverty, self image or previous domestic or sexual violence. Their work choice may be more about their other issues, rather than a strong career choice.
In my book that's exploiting vulnerable people and often compounding their existing problems rather than really helping.. As already mentioned, I,m not a big fan.

That was something that came across strongly a few years ago when I was speaking to that woman I mentioned earlier (who is not a close friend as such though I have known her for over 30 years). My brother had just died and we were clearing out the family home and I had a few beds, linen etc to get rid of, all in good condition. My friend came around and picked it all up. It's destination was for some of the women at her place of work. She said she tried to help them where she could and some lived in poverty, without much, so a proper bed would be a great help to them.
I must admit I was surprised by that, I wouldn't necessarily have expected prostitutes to be wealthy but I would have thought they would have the basics. Apparently not always, as other problems get in the way.
My impression since then has been it is an industry that draws more than its fair share of people with troubles.

Good grief - liked the bit about ' career choice '.
Try Googling - ' high class escorts ' - then of course wipe your history. lol
It's not always about ' issues '.

As mentioned in a previous post, I,m sure there is a small percentage of prostitutes that enter the industry as a form of chosen career, but " High class escorts " would make up a minute fraction of those working in the industry. ( just as the super rich make up a very small fraction of our global population. )
At the other end of the spectrum there would be some working behind skips in alleys. Up a step and they would be working from street corners hopping into random punters cars. For many of these woman, the safety of a regular room and a shower that a brothel provides would be luxury. On a global scale, this may form the largest sub - group of prostitues.
Then there are those who prostitute themselves by sleeping with men they have no affections for just to keep a roof over their heads. I think you will find this is vastly more common than you may imagine at first glance. Its not pretty and while I don't often go there I have to admit it genuinely highlights the worst of exploitation of vulnerable woman by controlling men.

Stating the obvious - again.
There is always another end of the spectrum.

No, I don't imagine it always is about issues. Nothing in life is ever 100% one way or the other on anything. There are always plenty of exceptions to every rule.
I'm sure there are some high class escorts out there making a lot of money but the place I was talking about was probably just run of the mill. All I am saying is the person I know who works there says a lot of the women there have issues. A woman sleeping on the floor of her flat in a sleeping bag, without even a bed to call her own doesn't scream high class escort to me.

Judging from your posts, it appears the obvious is not always obvious to you, until some-one takes the time to spell it out for you.....
