Asian Nannies at half the price.

An no, it's not an April Fools joke, that articles are dated 29/3.

The cost of childcare has been a political bugbear for more than a decade. But a submission to a crucial government inquiry into childcare has come up with a novel solution: low-cost Asian nannies.

The Indonesia Institute, a Perth-based think tank, says carers from countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines should be allowed to come to Australia and mind children for $200 a week to help ease pressure on family budgets.

Families would provide their Asian child carers with accommodation, clothing and medical insurance. The nannies would also be entitled to Sundays off and a return airfare home for two weeks each year.

I just came back from lunch with friends................. there was a woman in the group who has 6 children aged 3 to 18yo  and does not work outside the home. She "thinks she might be pregnant again"

Her 2 youngest go to daycare  😮  3 days a week so she can have a break.

I was gob smacked into silence. (and good manners dictate that I make no comment) as her "partner" is in and out of the prison system regularly and doesn't live with her (tradie), she gets a pension.

I am not envious............ and she isn't my friend but really?? free childcare?

I didn't have childcare when I was a stay at home mum and if it was available, I would not have used it?

Az, even when I had the nannies, we still sent our kids to daycare 2 or 3 times a week. The peady recommended it for socialization reasons. It wasn't free, we paid on top of the nanny, but it was felt that this benefitted the child.

It was also great because it put the kids with same aged peers, who they could not only work out how to play with, but also learn skills relevant to their age. If it weren't for the day care and the experience of those used to looking after children of that age, we would never have known that some development things were delayed/non existent. We would never have realized that some were advanced, and known to support those things too.

These carers were able to let us know that the kids interacted differently with others that we might not have realized at home with just "us" around.

I think my children are quite well socialised, I saw no need for any more,we have access to community things inc playgroup and then preschool, then school.

Each to their own but I can't see a benefit to these children being provided with free child care places so mum gets "time to go out lunching, drinking, smoking?"

Wouldn't 1 day a week be enough?

It will damage the local nanny industry for sure and basically give those with spare rooms cheap child care while the rest still have to pay big dollars for it.  Plus it will further drive down wages for those already on low wages.

Some obviously don't place a lot of value on those who care for the children.

It has always been so.  When I was caring for four children (as a babysitter on a casual basis), the woman who came to mop the floors and clean the toilets etc.earned exactly twice the hourly rate that I received.  We were both asking the going rate.

I agree with that, az.

I wasn't supporting the idea of the care being provided for free.

i think that's pretty rough.

Though I am sure there are circumstances where a mum might need "time off" so I'll write it in here so i don't get into troiuble. For example, IF that mum has some health issues, she may need some time to sort those out.

and also az, you I think, are probably one of the better mums and grandmas out there, niot every mum or grandma puts in the effort with the kids or knows how to be a great parent like you do. There are lots of cases where it really would be beneficial for the child to go to childcare even if mum is "home".

There are some pretty feral parents out there, and many are probably just like that because they don't know any better having not had a decent role model themselves. What chance does a child have to know that not everyone just wees in the pot plant, or to sit at a table and use cutlery, or does arty crafty things, reads to them etc.

Not every parent is like you az, and that's not the child's fault.

Why the definitive statement that women should stay home until the children go to school then?

I think Icy just forgot to be politically correct for a minute. I'm sure she meant either/or parent. She just forgot the preciousness in the world these days.

It's just as likely she might be just plain old fashioned with a sexist edge.

Because even in our "enlightened" times it's still the woman who shoulders most of the child-nurturing and home duties. Seeing the woman is the one needing to have a certain amount of time off to give birth, it's a natural progression.

Certainly some couples swap roles (apart from the birthing 🙂 )  and if it works for them that's to be applauded.

Either way, if child-care centre costs are rising and positions becoming scarcer, it'd end up being just as cost-effective for one of the parents to stay home. Usually the one whose wage is the lower.
