A friends partner was admitted to hospital and diagnosed with cancer in the liver and also the kidney.
While waiting for further tests he was discharged, then called back as an out patient for further test.
When he went for the first of the tests he was told he had to pay $700 up front before he could have the test. Had he still been an inpatient he would not have had to pay anything
He is on a Veteran Affairs Pension but doesn't have the gold card.

This is how they keep waiting lists and costs down. Looks good in the projections and the budget allocations.

Grandmoon, your friend should contact the Depatement of Veterans Affairs and ask about his entitlements regarding medical treatment. If he is over 70, he should automatically receive the Gold Card.
Is he on a part Disability pension from Veterans Affairs? This too makes a difference in claims for medical treatments.

I know someone who needs teatment for 1 hour per day 5 days pw.
He can have it as an outpatient close to home and get no help from either PHI or Medicare (so he can't afford it) or he can be admitted to hospital (over 3 hours away), unnecessarily take up a bed for at least 5 weeks and be fully covered.
The latter means giving up his job/life for all those weeks when, as an outpatient, he could carry on as normal. It is ridiculous!

I will let the friend know, she will be phone Veterans Affairs tomorrow to find out what he is entitled to. My son suggested that he get himself readmitted to the hospital untill all the tests and biopsy's are done.
