It isn't a parallel, it is ancient history. Neither is it a parralel to modern team sport.

I watched a movie a long time ago, it had James Caan in the starring role. The movie was Rollerball.

I can see a tendency that football is heading in the same direction.

You see what you wish to see, not having followed the game through it's changes.

In my lifetime it has become less about physical contact/on field force, and much more over the years about skill. The spectators are not an unruly mob, either.

I must admit that I rejected the sport when my brother suffered a broken neck from it and as in a plaster cast for over 8 months from head to waist.

Personal reasons are a reason to stay out of the sport as a participant or, perhaps, a spectator. It does not give one the right to mock those who have a reason to participate or be a spectator. Or fail to see how there could be an enjoyment from such an undertaking.

That applies to your chosen sport, too.
