I would have thought it was the reporting of up to date information of relevence to the general public.
I read two newspapers this morning - the Sydney Morning Herald and the Daily Telegraph.
The Sydney Morning Herald had fairly extensive news coverage of the what happened at Manus Island and some intelligent dialogue about what it means. Front page coverage as well as extensive coverage inside. They interviewed key witnesses, attempted to make contact with officials, have someone posted in PNG waiting for updates and have placed the incident into a national and global context.
The Telegraph had a small blurb (approximately 6 short single line paragraphs) at the bottom of page 4 with a small headline which basically said little more than the body of a man murdered on Manus Island is now back in Iran and that the "people of Manus Isalnd have expressed their sadness that the violent death has drawn attention to their peaceful home".
And people get upset if you dare suggest that the Murdoch news is the media of choice for the least intelligent Australians...

I have noticed a few businesses (hairdresser etc) lately that used to have our local newspaper for customers to read while waiting now have The Daily Telegraph... urgh. They most likely switched the to Telegraph because they get them free or at very discounted price.

I am a migrant advocate.
I bought him over, sponsored him (and worked to support him) until he could work
I have the ring on my finger ...he worked/works hard for our family (for us and all of my Australian children ,3 of which weren't/aren't his)
he escaped bad weather and a bad economic environment (the UK) ..not war, persecution etc
I'd advocate for him and any other such newcomers any day regardless of where they come from
Was he an asylum seeker that arrived by boat and was placed in a detention centre and was part of a riot there?
No his Life did not depend upon coming here .
It was all too easy ................

Nothing unusual about a person marrying someone from another country? Once immigration conditions are met.

I don't believe that I posted that it was unusual.
What is strange imo...is that he didn't need to come here to be safe ....and it was easy and pain free and he is not looked down upon.
Those who need to come here for safety ....suffer pain, degredation, depravation, ridicule (by some)...as part of the process of being able to stay here (and be safe)

Not comparable in anyway to a person fleeing their country because of persecution and ending up in a detention centre where there has been a riot and severe injuries and a death.

martini - that is bad... Telegraph giving free newspapers to shops to increase the number of people who may pick it up and read it.

Did anyone see the story about Ray Hadley and the AVOs that were withdrawn when they made the news?

I will comment/question any other posts in a thread. Especially when they aren't even slightly relevant to the topic... What is the role of the newspaper.. re reporting on aslyum seekers riot on Manus Is. Nothing 'game' like about it for me. Interested in discussion on thread topics.
freaki, I didn't see that.
