What is the role of a newspaper?

I would have thought it was the reporting of up to date information of relevence to the general public.

I read two newspapers this morning - the Sydney Morning Herald and the Daily Telegraph.

The Sydney Morning Herald had fairly extensive news coverage of the what happened at Manus Island and some intelligent dialogue about what it means. Front page coverage as well as extensive coverage inside. They interviewed key witnesses, attempted to make contact with officials, have someone posted in PNG waiting for updates and have placed the incident into a national and global context.

The Telegraph had a small blurb (approximately 6 short single line paragraphs) at the bottom of page 4 with a small headline which basically said little more than the body of a man murdered on Manus Island is now back in Iran and that the "people of Manus Isalnd have expressed their sadness that the violent death has drawn attention to their peaceful home".

And people get upset if you dare suggest that the Murdoch news is the media of choice for the least intelligent Australians...

if the saying that 'bad news sells' is correct and Murdoch media isn't wanting to give too much of that where our current Government is concerned ....... I'd say there could be quite a bit of covering of backsides going on as well as points others have raised.

Is it correct that in the pre-election years Tony Abbott have weekly meetings with murdoch media ? (the times when any garbage and/or created garbage about our Gov't was published ).Does he still ?

No INAM just  a term that is correct, not one deliberately emotive,  and not supported within a legal definition under the circumstances.

I do though have  a liitle sympathy INAM for this comment of yours apropos Murdoch:

"It is his way of controlling politics from afar."

As I have always alluded, 80% of the electorate are  controlled , with minimal effort, because they are:

Where do you get the 80% figure from?

Rupert Murdoch tweets Rudd ‘convincing nobody’

PUBLISHED: 20 AUG 2013 0

BEN WOODHEAD

News Corp executive chairman Rupert Murdoch has weighed into the 2013 federal election on Twitter, declaring that Opposition Leader Tony Abbott is a “rare exception” in politics and that Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is “convincing nobody”.

The tweet, posted on Tuesday morning AEST, could again inflame tensions between the Labor government and Mr Murdoch’s News Corp Australia, which have already boiled over during the election campaign.

In a separate tweet, Mr Murdoch also took aim at multiculturalism, although the comment was not specifically aimed at Australia.

Mr Rudd’s daughter, Jessica Rudd was quick to respond to Mr Murdoch’s tweet, thanking the mogul for “taking the time each day to tell us what to think”.

Murdoch Accidentally Tweets Federal Election Result

 http://thestrayan.com/2013/623

Rupert Murdoch has been left red-faced on the eve of the federal election, as the media mogul accidentally tweeted the electoral results more than a day before the scheduled official announcement by the Australian Electoral Commission.

Reports suggest that it was an administrative error that led to the News Corp CEO revealing the results before votes were cast, let alone announced, by the nation’s media. It is understood that the incriminating tweet linked to a .pdf document that offered a comprehensive overview of the results in each electorate and division, as well the exact time on Saturday night that each electorate would be called for the winning Party. Although removed within seven minutes from Twitter and replaced with an apologetic tweet, the damage was already done as many Australians had the election outcome spoiled completely.

From Ch 7 CEO:

We are in an environment where everyone with a phone is a potential news gatherer. We are now seeing more news coverage and news pictures than ever before,” Worner said.

I think 'eye witness' accounts are very valuable. especially in events like the riot on Manus Is. Uncensored by any Govt or organisation.

that can't be right can it ? boxes of votes might need to disappear to get the results in each electorate and division correct.

I am a migrant advocate.

I bought him over, sponsored him (and worked to support him) until he could work

I have the ring on my finger ...he worked/works hard for our family (for us and all of my Australian children ,3 of which weren't/aren't his)

he escaped bad weather and a bad economic environment (the UK) ..not war, persecution etc

I'd advocate for him and any other such newcomers any day regardless of where they come from

I would rather wait for the results of the professional inquiry to be released rather than read the biased reporting of newspapers & the unsubstantiated verbal of vested interests.

Making it about you again?

Pretty hard to believe that could happen .

I just remembered this;

Azerbaijan election result published before polling starts

Oct 11,2013

Baku: Something funny happened the day before Azerbaijan's presidential election: the election commission announced the winner.

On Tuesday, a day before the voting began, the smartphone app of the Central Election Commission released results showing President Ilham Aliyev, whose family has been at the helm of the Caspian Sea nation for four decades, winning 73 per cent of the vote.

After the polls closed on Wednesday, the commission said Aliyev had won 85 per cent of the vote.
