I never use it either and particularly dislike it when it's used in the polite bullying maayte way.

 

4c, iwhen you say it 'maayte' - (long drawn out mate)

it's kinda like insulting someone, and saying it with a smile,  sorta

I've used  mates w/ Irish crews but I don't think i've used it in the singular.
