I keep hearing that Abbott wants to take us back to the 50's but I wasn't born then.
I just want to prepare myself for what it might be like under an Abbott LNP Government.
I appreciate your input

Women were expected to stop working when they got married, they could not get a mortgage on their own. Yes there was contraception but only available to married women. Single mums were often forced to give up their babies for adoption. There was only white bread. Evening meal was usually a chop & 3 veg, or shepherds pie. Shops were opened 9-6 (?) Monday - Friday, and Saturday midday, everything was closed on Sunday. Pubs had to stop serving alcohol at 6 pm until the 1960s when it was extended till 10pm, and women had to drink only in the "Ladies Lounge".

Unless you were a part of a traditional family structure it was a very frightening time to be a child. I don't care who wins this bunfight, but please God they do not go back to those times. The current world is so much better.

DY: "I keep hearing that Abbott wants to take us back to the 50s, but I wasn't born then."
But but you keep quoting history, and history, and history!
Not really:

Can't really help you there. I was born 1955 and can't remember much at all.

Oh, where do we start......
Pick an aspect or two and we can detail the conditions.

Not sure, I suppose a person's perception of the 1950s would depend where they sat in the social tier of that era. It could have been to some either "Father Knows Best" or "Peyton Place"

The 50's was defiantly more family orientated. We didn't have a car but public transport was great and we never missed out on outings. In fact outing were more affordable then than now for families.
Food tasted great....none of the genetically engineered rubbish that goes on now.

@donnashuggy wrote:My mum told me there was a lack of contraception so I know about that. There were lots of large families around and you had to wear a hat to church.
Hat and gloves to church. To go to town, gloves, stockings, step-ins, adults wore hats. No-one deviated from these rules.

Probably would like to. We shouldn't strain our female brains.
