about a month ago i bought a small split system air conditioner from 'Kogan' (an online shoping site)
normally not an item i would buy as the size if bought locally would be about $700 for just the unit
but kogan had an end of summer sale unit at $430.
then they had a free delivery sale too on the airconditioner
then they sent me a 'get $20 off' promotion
bringing the price down to $410 delivered.
so i got one.
i have been planning to save up to have it installed in a few months.
i will now spend the $750 on the install

$750 tax free ?

Split systems are installed by electicians and plumbers as they use a copper pipe to pump the gas around and
only a plumber can work on those.
They both worked at $80 per hour when they installed ours 3 years ago.
Ours also had an installer but when we moved we had one guy do the lot as it was only a re-connect as
everything was already there.

I had 2 split sytems installed in the properties I look after today.
One company............no extra electricians.......no extra plumbers.
But.........they did say when I got the quote that they needed to check the metre box to see if I needed an upgrade as they run at a certain ampage.
Maybe this could be the reason some on here have had an electrician needed with the install.

They would've needed to be a qualified electrician and a plumber unless the pipes were pre-fit.
It's a pretty cushie job installing split systems so it's generally easy for companies that have personnel to
do the jobs for them.
They are supposed to be hardwired into the power plugs/system and that's a sparkies job so there has to
always be a electrician and it's also their job to check the system is safe to run and has an adequate supply.

i know here there has to be an elecrical cable run from the meter box to next to the outside unit with a switch, thats about 4 metres.
i also know there needs to be pipes run from the wall unit inside to the unit outside plus electrical wires.
plus a hole thru the wall for those pipes/wires.
before i get it done i'll get a couple of quotes.
when i replaced the evaporative a few years ago the guy wanted to supply his brand of aircon and install it.
he quoted $1300 for the air con + install cost
i managed to find a bonaire unit for under $1000 on sale so bought that instead.
i rekon he charged me extra for installing it to make up the difference, no proof but it felt that way.
i would hope not to use him again but finding airconditioner installers isnt easy up here.
when its 40c and you have no airconditioning you dont wait for quotes, you just want it done.
this time theres no rush
the cash isnt going to be paid until march 31st.

May also depend on the size of the unit, mine is a 5kw, so the meter box needed to be upgraded I also have a 3kw one but I didnt install it, so no idea if they needed a sparky or not. Could also depend on the age of the house and its meter box capacity

David my cable needed to be run from the back wall of the house to the meter box near the front door, a distance of approx 12 metres, so that prob added to the cost.
