When is Racism not racism.

I've seen this ad a few times now. I don't think the ad gets its point across. How is it discrimination against just indigenous is a stretch? Just cause the person feel like they've been discriminated because they're indigenous doesn't make it so. You can look suspecious with your hands tucked into your sleeve regardless of your race. Plus that woman frankly just look white to me. And some women simply prefer not to sit next to man on a bus. The last guy just look mediteranian to me even though the only bit related to the indigenous is the "ab0" joke.

I get the point they're trying to make on the ad but it just ends up mocking the indigeous for being cry babies. I don't like this ad.

Re: When is Racism not racism.

I don't want to get into this thread (or even come back to it after this) because racism makes my blood boil and I don't want to be angry all week simply because I have read comments on CS from people that couldn't possibl;y understand what real racism feels like.

The odd remark here and there about your white skin or the innocent (in your case) act of asking to have your bag checked is in no way comparable to what our indigenous people face in their lives day after day.

And it is telling that you all categorically dismissed and in one case derided the comments that lobs (one of the only indigenous people on our board) made without any attempt at understanding the difference between even the simple every day things like an indigenous person being asked to open her bags between you and I being asked to get our bags checked.

Anyhow, keep on congratulating yourselves on having white skin and regalling each other with "a friend I know", "this happened in my town" stories of reverse racism or pretend empathy with indigenous people because you have also been asked to open your bags or had the same look from shopkeepers or show your indignity at an indigenous persons football team without understanding the history behind it - THAT is the crux of the racism problem towards our indigenous people in Australia and it simply saddens be beyond belief.

Just as other people's comments are being dismissed!
And that is exactly why this will never be resolved....no-one is willing to listen or truly believe what the other is saying.

I don't know how to take your post. Are you supporting people being victims???? Victims mentality; in which a person tends to regard him or herself as a victim of the negative actions of others, and to think, speak and act as if that were the case - even in the absence of clear evidence. It depends on habitual thought processes and attribution. What's your point???

When somebody is constantly treated badly they will react; some will withdraw into themselves, others will become aggressive, some might have enough support around them & the strength to deal with it .  But it is not their choice how their mental state develops.    Some people become damaged,  and to say "stop being a victim" is just like saying to somebody with broken leg to stop limping.  Except it is much easier to heal broken leg than damaged mind.

Re: When is Racism not racism.

Actually martini, as a very light skinned person who lived in a very 'nonwhite' suburb some years ago, I do know what it is like to be prejudged because of my 'race'. I know what it is like to be spat at, touched (both from curiosity and groped), talked about, have my child physically assaulted daily...

I also know that sometimes people do it because difference is fascinating. It isn't always because of hatred or contempt although sometimes it is. And having grown up in a very low socioeconomic area, from parents with mental health and substance abuse issues and being judged for that as well, I possibly know more about being on the receiving end of prejudice than someone on a forum who sees it all from an intellectual, condescending, 'aren't I so PC' level.

And you can add a hint of indigenous in the mix too.

I wonder if your preference would be questioned if you were indigenous?

Re the video, I am hopeless at picking who is what nationality and wouldn't have known if any of those were indigenous. I've also had the same look from shopkeepers and job interviewers.

No I dont think that it would. I personally think most other races are encouraged to be proud except for white people.  We are made to feel collective guilt everyday for the "crimes" of our forefathers.

I think we give every concession available to Indeginous people.  For example the Aboriginal CO-OP around here oversees things say when their govt house is being painted.  While it's being painted they are given free hotel accomodation for however long it takes to paint the house and then the scrutinization process of inspection after the job has been finished is intense.

Everyone else in govt housing just has to endure the painters being in their place etc and when it's over they'd be lucky to even have it inspected...

I want to know why we are expected to just keep putting up with assault, theft and abuse, even having their cousins and bros etc ganging up on ur children....are we just meant to smile and walk away?
When is enough enough?

And don't anyone suggest the law and police as a solution ๐Ÿ˜•

Except that white children were always told to be proud of their white heritage, and white culture, and were told they are better.

Well I've only really heard about that type of thing Love, and where I live there is a high number of Indigenous peeps.  I dont/havent had any problems over the last 12 months since moving here... But (sorry Martini) I have heard alot of stories from locals that have had or been having ongoing problems.

No you should never just smile and walk away, you should stand up for yourself and your family ALWAYS ๐Ÿ™‚
