Employment Minister Eric Abetz says whistleblower Kathy Jackson should be treated no differently to other disgraced union leaders but firmly maintains she was instrumental in lifting the “veil of secrecy” on corruption within the labour movement.
Bill Shorten described it yesterday as the “biggest union fraud in Australia” and attacked Tony Abbott and Senator Abetz for praising Ms Jackson when she blew the whistle on former HSU president Michael Williamson and her predecessor as national secretary, Craig Thomson.
Senator Abetz said the Opposition Leader was “delighted” by the demise of Ms Jackson for strictly political reasons and not because he wanted to clean up the “rats’ nest” within the union movement.
The government has been unable to pass its legislation to revive the Australian Building and Construction Commission or its registered organisations legislation, which would improve union transparency and governance.
“What I would say to Bill Shorten, if he is so concerned: support our registered organisations commission legislation, which would require the same standard basically of union officials as that of company directors,” he said.
Senator Abetz seized on Mr Shorten’s condemnation of Ms Jackson to question why he had not taken a similarly critical approach to the findings from the royal commission: there have been four arrests and 30 people referred for possible charges.
