Who is more oppressed?

Well, that's a difficult one isn't it.

One the one hand we have a woman who has the choice whether or not to go out dressed in minimalistic style, or to wear a more concealing form of dress.

She can freely make this choice without fear of censure from her male relatives, or if they do harrass her for her choice, she can tell them to get stuffed, it's none of their business, and she can expect  not to have battery acid thrown in her face or to suffer other forms of violence from them for her decision.

On the other hand, we have someone (sex indeterminate) who has either chosen to, or has been pressured  (by her male relatives and members of her religious institution), to live their public life dressed in a sack while wearing a mask which conceals their facial expressions and their identity.

Gee, sorry, Bob. I just can't decide on an answer to your question.

Re: Who is more oppressed?

Some people do adapt to it and then go on to rationalise their existential situation as being  normal.

I think this is called cognitive dissonance. (Bob might correct me if I'm mistaken)

Re: Who is more oppressed?

Don't make the mistake of assuming that every woman behind the veil has been forced there.

Recommended reading "From my Sisters Lips" by Na'ima B. Robert

Covered from head to toe with only her eyes visible, the sight of a Muslim woman on a western city street rarely fails to provoke a strong reaction. Feelings of shock, horror, repulsion, pity or even fear are not uncommon. But have you ever wondered who it is behind the veil and what makes her tick? Ever wondered what her life is really like and whether her dreams, hopes and aspirations differ from yours? From My Sisters' Lips offers a rare glimpse into the lives of a community of women, most of whom are converts to Islam, and invites you to share their joys, sorrows, convictions and faith.

When Na'ima B Robert abandoned her western lifestyle and embraced Islam six years ago, it was not a decision taken lightly. Yet soon after she took her first tentative steps towards covering, she felt empowered; no longer judged on physical appearances alone, no longer seeking the approval to feel beautiful - or using her looks to wield power over men - the experience effected her greatly. Before long she grew in confidence and courage. As she says, 'Something just clicked. I thought, "Good, don't look; don't compare me with your latest squeeze, don't try and guess my measurements - my body is my own business!"'
From My Sisters' Lips offers a glimpse into the lives of just some of the extraordinary women who, like herself, have chosen to live behind the veil. What emerges is a vivid and intimate portrait of a sisterhood; as they speak candidly and with conviction on a diverse range of subjects ranging from marriage to motherhood, stereotypes, submission and self-image, we hear the strong, proud voices of those who are seldom heard

Since 2012 women in Iran have been prohibited from attending Male volleyball matches. TAKE ACTION below to put pressure the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) to ban Iran from hosting games until they stop banning women.

Re: Who is more oppressed?

One of the reasons for the Cronulla riot was that Aussie men were fed up with Lebanese and middle eastern men were calling the young women on the beach sluts. It had been going on for years.

Re: Who is more oppressed?

lurker - in some countries, women

still don't have a choice.

Under the Taliban the burqa was obligatory. While this is officially no longer the case, there remains intense social pressure to wear the burqa, and President Hamid Karzai has been accused by critics of compromising on women's rights in order to appease insurgents.

and there was this:

In 1923, Hoda Shaarawi made history when, while waiting for the press, she removed her veil in a symbolic act of liberation.
