Why Have Channels 10 & 7 Banned This Ad?

Marriage Alliance angry after channels 'refuse to run ads against gay-marriage'

Ms York said the Marriage Alliance wanted to find out what impacts legalising same sex marriage would have.

“We so have to find out what ramifications there will be. What will be the effects, there'll be so little discussion about this,” she said at the launch last Sunday.

The group said it had contacted Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull to make them aware of the decision.

"Has political correctness or the power of a certain lobby group reached so far down that it now erodes the once proud Australian 'fair-go' character that it is preventing ordinary Australians from having a voice?” Ms York said.

I guess the TV Channels have the right to refuse or accept advertising as they see fit. But this ad isn't really even saying anything for or against. It's just inviting you to contact them for further discussion.

debra -

please refer to my initial comment

and your reply.

i never said there were no complaints.

i said there were many posts of support.

no, i don't agree they are 'few and far between'

they keep coming.

posted just now:

Thank you for letting both sides of the same-sex marriage debate have their say. It appears to be uncommon for media content providers these days to let the unpopular opinion say anything, and you've earned my respect for doing so.

Re: Why Have Channels 10 & 7 Banned This Ad?

Why are people so scared of the opposing view? If they really think they are bigots and their opinion has no merit then whats the problem with airing it? To be honest I dont understand why either side is spending money on advertising, seems rather wasteful to me.

I always think both sides of any issue should be discussed if there is any hope of getting people to change their minds. Calling people names for not agreeing with your opinion just makes them more determined to stand thier ground, open discussion will open more minds.

OMG I just had a look at that foxtel page

The venom and threats from the marriage equality mob are frightening!

The only reasonable one I saw was this:

  • I am pro equality and I watched the ad and can see nothing wrong with it. Just a group offering a different view for those interested. People have a right to differing opinions and vetoing that is also discrimination in my

Re: Why Have Channels 10 & 7 Banned This Ad?

Piers Akerman:

THE homosexual marriage lobby likes to claim it plants its rainbow-coloured flags firmly on the summit of the high moral ground.

Diversity has been its catch cry.

But it is quick to stiffly opposing viewpoints. Like those of the new Marriage Alliance.

The group, launched last weekend, supports the Marriage Act and wants to start a proper debate on same sex marriage.

It not unreasonably asks whether the rights of children are being subjugated by arguments about equality between gay and heterosexual adults. It says that the more important issues about the consequences and the rights of future generations, sex education, religious freedoms, morality, business and professional regulations, and legal implications resulting from permitting same-sex marriage haven’t been thoroughly examined.

The spokesperson for the marriage alliance is Sydney barrister, Sophie York, a published author, an instructor in International Humanitarian Law (IHL), and member of a number of boards, committees and associations.

York insists there is absolutely no intention to denigrate the gay community, devalue them or their relationships. She says that would be wrong and unjust and the aim of the campaign is to focus on the erosion of rights and freedoms currently allowed in our democracy.

To this end, a group of individuals, businesses and community organisations who are concerned that the Australian people are not getting the full story on the implications of changing the Act, funded a 15-second television ad which basically does no more than say that the Marriage Alliance exists and shows its web address — marriagealliance.com.au

But a few television channels including 7 and 10 and some radio networks have refused to run the totally innocuous commercial — although a Seven spokesman said there was no politics in the decision and the station didn’t have a 15-second spot.

That’s their right, of course, but if these supporters of what they like to call marriage equality ever claim to support diversity or free speech they won’t have a leg to stand on.

Re: Why Have Channels 10 & 7 Banned This Ad?

What I find most offensive from their website is them intimating that children from same sex couples suffer from a "lack of a mother's love" and are "limited in their physical, psychological, emotional and intellectual development associated with fatherless or motherless social units (as in same sex marriage). It is ignorant bs like this that harms children and not the gender of the parents.

Re: Why Have Channels 10 & 7 Banned This Ad?

While I agree that gay couples are more than capable of loving children just as safely as any others, I do have concerns re the raising of children in single sex parenting , but this also extends to single fathers and mothers raising kids as well , I have seen the results in a limited fashion with the boys I coach in football , I believe we should be looking into the issue of single sex parenting quit closely , as well as the lack of male school teachers as I believe it is impacting on our kids

What I find sad but strangely enlightening is that the arguments currently being put forward here in Australia  against same sex marriage are almost identical to the ones I heard  against black/white marriage all those years ago when I was a teenager in England. Bigotry never changes - only its targets.
