Why can't cat owners keep their cat INSIDE?

I am so over all the cats roaming through our backyard.

Not only does it mean our pet rabbit can't be outside in his own backyard or that I have to watch out where I put my hands when I am gardening because there is cat c*ap every where or that we get woken up at night because of cat fights.

But today I have spent the afternoon washing down with bleach all the entrances to my house, the perimetre walls and garden pots because the stench of their spraying is unbearable. They are even spraying the cars in the driveway.

And whilst I know that every cat owner on here will say they are responsible cat owners or that their cat is always inside or that they have cat runs so their cats never leave their property, I have yet to meet a cat owner in Sydney that has any of the above.

If you can't keep a cat on YOUR property then you have no business owning a cat in the first place.

I take more offence to people that walk their dogs on leads and allow the pet to defeacate on my front lawns.

Why? That is against the law and there is usually a person at the other end of the lead that you can take it up with. Not to mention that the chances of that occurring night after night after night in the same spot is remote. And if it is really an issue then you can put a gate up that stops them from entering your property.

There is absolutely NOTHING I can do about nuisance cats. There is no way of tracking their owners. There is no way of keeping them out. There is no law that can be applied that will work.

I have a cat that has the run of the place and I don't have a cat enclosure or run.

She knows that home is the safest place to be as there are too many dogs in the area as well as guard dogs.  A neighbour has told us that she is the only cat in the area that has survived to an old age.  She did manage to train our own dogs though.

Sorry for your pain!

Cats that are fighting at night usually are the cats that aren't desexed.... Bad pet ownership...

My kitty does go outside, but stay's our property.

Just a warning, if you are cleaning down your house with bleach...  cats find bleach to smell like cat pee, and will be attracted to it, then will pee there again to mark their territory...

Maybe because it is cruel for cat to be locked in the house full time, and it is not easy to confine cat.  In any case, be careful what you wish for 🙂

When i first moved into this house some 20 years ago there were cats everywhere, mainly entire toms who would spray on my front porch .  Our council is pretty strict on cats roaming at night, and as over the years the cats were not being replaced we started to get mice and rats.  I did not want another cat myself, but got to the stage that I was spending small fortune every week on rat baits, and I have very type of trap under the sun, and relented.  At present my cat seems to be the only one around, and as she is getting on too, she only catches baby mice, and occasionally baby rat.  Guess it helps but I wish other people would get cats too.

~ because they're cats, and they want to roam. I think it's cruel keeping a cat inside 24/7. Ideally cats should have an outdoor enclosure they can run around in.

Flojoe beat me to it.

Washing with bleach is probably the worst thing you could have done. The cats will smell it as a challenge and try and out pee your mark.

Do you ever get to see these cats? a water pistol or hose on them might put them off. Or maybe one of those motion sensor alarms that barks like a dog.

I'm afraid my cat isn't always inside. If I try and keep her in she literally bounces of the walls and shreds the curtains and yowls until I give in and let her out. At one point she even started peeing in my bedroom as an act of vengeance. Horrible critter. I do have 10 acres though and my neighbours have dogs so I don't think she ventures very far.

I have a cat that goes out during the day but I keep her in at night.

She comes back home every 20 minutes to check on me 🙂

The problem I have is with stupid people that walk their dogs with out leads.

I have had two big dogs in my lounge chasing the cat and I so sick of dog Poo on the foot paths or my lawn.
