Why would any young person do this?

Work for Abbotts "Green Army" for $10 an hour when the minimum youth wage in Australia is around $18 an hour?

Employment opportunitiues are NOT falling rapidly. In Australia we are fortunate that our unemployment rate is so incedibly low.

But on saying all of that, I expect our unemployed youth to have proper opportuntes, at real jobs that provide them with proper skills or qualifications, at a realistic salary in satisfying circumstances. THAT is what keeps them on a stable path.

Re: Why would any young person do this?

My youngest daughter "worked" for Greencorp in 2000. She found the experience totally rewarding and learned heaps from the experience.  I dont know what the hourly rate was back them, I am assuming it wasn't much, but for her it was so much more rewarding than sitting at home doing nothing.

So why did Abbott reopen the 457 loophole???? So that the australian unemployed youth could sit at home and

experiment with drugs??? (I included the "drugs' together from your quote...alcohol is a drug... at least in my real world

how about yours???)

This morning’s revelation that the Abbott Government “quietly” reopened a visa loophole on February 14 is

extremely disconcerting, given the plans Bechtel have to greatly increase the number of 457 workers on Curtis Island.

A letter leaked on Facebook yesterday showed Bechtel’s intention to start another 120 to 150 international fitters and

welders on the LNG construction sites.

That would cover the lower wage rate.

Not sure if the participants only work in their home area or they travel away to where the projects are.

And the work isn't exactly educational - clearing scrub, planting trees, spraying weeds, clearing waterways of rubbish etc."

A traineeship is not an apprenticeship. What trade can you complete in 6 months, with a Cert. II qual?

Does the work need to be educational? In what way? A business admin traineeship teaches trainees to file, type , photocopy, WHS - basic tasks they would do in a paid entry level position in that field. Cert I or II is pretty low level stuff. They aren't Uni grads.

Wage Awards include a National Training Wage Schedule. With minimum wage rates for trainees.

If young unemployed people join voluntarily because they want to do something, other than sit at home, then I can't see it as a bad thing. They also get paid more than they would receive on YA or Newstart.

"How an apprenticeship works
An apprenticeship is the time spent learning a skilled trade under a qualified tradesperson. There are hundreds of types of trade – from hairdresser to mechanic, electrician to chef, plumber to cabinet maker.

How a traineeship works
A traineeship is the time spent learning a job (or vocation) under a supervisor. You can do a traineeship in just about any workplace, for example in a shop, a fast food outlet or office.
After finishing your traineeship you will gain a minimum qualification at a Certificate II level."

Re: Why would any young person do this?

it seems like a pile of rubbish, wonder how many get a job out of it

The participants will be eligible for certificate qualifications in areas such as land management and horticulture.

Really? Is this a new qualification made up by the govt instead of creating real jobs? How many jobs are available in "land management and agriculture"? Is this the 5th way - a not work for the dole work for the dole programme. Maybe it's similar to herr abetz's bricklaying comment.

How to gain a qualification

There are four ways of obtaining a qualification from the Agriculture, Horticulture and Conservation and Land Management Training Package (AHC10):

  1. Australian Apprenticeships – an employment based training arrangement that combines practical work experience with an underpinning theory based component. Training is delivered utilising a variety of different delivery methods by a Registered Training Organisation that also assesses the Australian Apprentice and awards an appropriate qualification on successful completion.
  2. Skills Recognition – this is a process whereby individuals gather evidence to demonstrate their skills and knowledge base and, if deemed competent, may be awarded an appropriate qualification (e.g. Certificate IV in Agribusiness).
  3. Study with a Registered Training Organisation by enrolling in any of the qualifications listed in the Agriculture, Horticulture and Conservation and Land Management Training Package (AHC10) at an appropriate TAFE College, private Registered Training Organisation or Agricultural College.
  4. Complete a VET in Schools Qualification – normally at the Certificate I and II level while participating in compulsory schooling.

Re: Why would any young person do this?

Am - doing the 6 months does not give these youngsters a Cert 1 or 2. It MAY give them points towards a Cert 1 in some courses apparently although none of the TAFES or colleges know anything about it.

I don't have an issue with the idea. My issue is that these kids (and it is expected that the majority will be aged 20-24 so not even kids) will be earning next to nothing. And whilst they may be on the same rate as Newstart, their outlays will be higher than a kid sitting at home getting Newstart. NOt to mention that they will be working their butts off in some of the programs.

Why can't the govt pay them minimum wage as was proposed during the election run up?

There are 257 000 approx unemployed youth in Aust. 15 000 opportunities for this 'traineeship' doesn't go far enough.

Re: Why would any young person do this?

If the $10 p.h. is just made up for this scheme that isn't right.

The trainee wage rates in awards are fairly low, but a person who has left school 2 years ago gets a higher rate than one who has left one year ago and so on.

"The Coalition will create a standing ‘Green Army’ that will gradually build to a 15,000 strong environmental workforce. We will create and properly resource the Green Army, as a larger and more lasting version of the former Green Corps. It will be Australia’s largest-ever environmental deployment"

I don't know how they are able tp predict that 15 000 will enrol in this scheme..may never happen.

Re: Why would any young person do this?

"The work a person undertakes as part of a Green Army programme would normally be counted toward the requirements of a training course such as a Certificate 1 or 2 in land management, park management, landscaping or horticulture.

Green Army projects will run for up to 26 weeks (full-time). Projects will deploy nine participants led by a supervisor who will be responsible for the day-to-day administration of the project.

Funding will be provided to each Green Army team for materials and equipment to allow participants to carry out their work.

The scheme is an opt-in programme initially for 17-24 year olds.

Participants can apply as school leavers and gap year students and the unemployed can also opt to join the Green Army as an alternative to Work for the Dole programmes."

One supervisor to 9 participants? That's a lot of supervisors (salaries) for 15 000 participants. Plus funding for material and equipment

I think it will be good for anyone who has a genuine interest in this type of work (conservation). If they don't I can't see many wanting to do it.

people do it because they believe they will get a job out of it, they won't because the jobs aren't there.
