Interesting developments:

The battle against coronavirus is going hi-tech, with Australians to be asked to download a phone app that will monitor their movements — but only with their express permission.

The Federal Government believes restrictions on the community could be eased in the months ahead if there's more testing, greater surveillance of those infected by the coronavirus and much faster tracing of those they've had contact with.

It is developing a mobile phone app with the private sector to help monitor Australians' daily interactions.

The ABC understands the app will be ready in a fortnight but the Government believes it would need at least 40 per cent of Australians to voluntarily sign up for it to be effective.

The app would be opt-in only and not mandatory.

This app will make contact tracing easier as it will enable authorities to contact people via their phones if they have come in contact with someone who subsequently tests positive.

Personally, count me in.  I can always delete the app once this pandemic has settled.  If I was to become really concerned I’d simply get a new phone, new number, new sim! OR, simply turn off Bluetooth

Those who keep spouting on about this how  this  app will track them and learn all about their little lives make me laugh.   Does anyone really really think Google doesn't already have all that down pat?   And Microsoft?   Facebook?  They all know what we eat for breakfast.

Besides unless one is engaged in nefarious activities what's the worry?

Anything that helps to diminish this bug works for me and I'm glad to see many are coming round to it.

and just to demonstrate what google are already able to do take a look at this story.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-02-04/man-creates-fake-traffic-jam-on-google-maps-by-carting-99-pho...

Spoiler
for those who who don’t like to click on links, this story is about a German artist who filled a pull-cart with mobile phones and walked around some streets.  The ‘maps’ feature of the phones was fooled into thinking that each phone was in a vehicle and there was a massive traffic jam and updated it’s maps in real time.

**note** while this artist used phones with ‘location’ enabled on each of the phones, the COVIDSafe app DOES NOT keep track of your location, just the people you are near for more than 15 minutes.

Not everyone has their mobile phone internet connected

The Govt could have used their own resources to store the data  and have the app downloadable from the mygov account

Well anyhow if there is a data breach then Amazon gets kicked out of Australia , fair enough ?

I saw that. Doesn't surprise me.

Apparently Mary-Louise McLaws is not a sheep and she's definitely not a lemming. Good for her!

great app!

"The person next to you has covid-19 - we have a product from Amazon to help you shipped express from china with a FREE washington post subscription - no workers were sacked bringing you this message"

Don't get caught using ebay on your phone or the app will self destruct and go into offensive mode and facilitate you getting infected - ebay is BAD according to Amazon and Jeff Bezos.

"you have caught covid 19 - amazon has a great range of funeral services and products available-mention this alert and get a 10% discount - mention to a friend with covid 19 and get 15% off your next funeral purchase from amazon for the both of you-for a limited time only"

Yes I would definitely download it if I had a smart phone. With the government splashing so much money about, what about giving the old and vulnerable smart phones so that can download the ap.

Easing coronavirus restrictions depends on the uptake of the Government's tracing app, so has your MP downloaded it?

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-05-07/has-your-mp-downloaded-the-coronavirus-tracing-app/12215092?n...

until scomo can get his own team 'on board' he should stop the shaming of those in the public not rushing to download his app.
