Woman Glued To Phone Walks Off Vic Pier

Walking and social media is no LOLing matter, Victoria police say.

A tourist is lucky to be alive after she fell into Melbourne's Port Phillip Bay while browsing on Facebook, police say.

The woman was walking along St Kilda pier engrossed in social media, when she walked off the pier into the icy waters of the bay about 11.30pm on Tuesday.

A quick thinking witness raised the alarm and police rushed to the scene.

Police on land were able to point out the position of the distressed woman, floundering in the water, to water police units who rescued her about 20 metres from the pier.

It is believed the woman did not know how to swim. She was taken to hospital for treatment.

There will be no need for a lost property report as the woman kept hold of her mobile phone throughout the entire ordeal.

Re: Woman Glued To Phone Walks Off Vic Pier

I don't know why I even have a phone and am paying for a plan! I rarely get to answer my phone, most of the time it rings while I'm either driving or on another call at work.

Then I have to go voicemail to retrieve it.

Lately I've been using it a lot to take pictures for the photo thread and I use it for phone banking a fair bit. Things I don't really need.

People walking should be subject to the same rules as drivers. Pull off the side of a walkway, remain stationary for the duration of your call/text/tweet, then after giving proper indication, rejoin the others walking in a safe manner.

Only close call I have ever had in traffic, due to mobile phone use, was someone just walking straight across the road in front of me, paying more attention to their phone than if any traffic was coming.

Yes, I have an opinion. No you don't have to agree with it. Yes I do have a right to it.

She should have waited until today to walk off the st Kilda Pier with a temp of 40.

And I doubt the waters would've been icy the last few days.  Gotta laugh.
