Woman beaten up on rowdy Vic bus

A WOMAN is in hospital after a group of up to nine people beat her until she was unconscious on a full Melbourne bus.

The 26-year-old St Kilda woman complained to the driver after the rowdy group boarded the bus in the city, because they were being boisterous and knocking into other passengers.

After she complained, one of the women in the group threw a drink over the St Kilda woman then punched her in the face, police say.

Other group members then dragged the woman to the ground where they punched and kicked her body and head until she was unconscious.

Several other people had also complained to the driver about the group, which was standing in the aisle because the bus was full.

The group fled after the bus driver opened the door on Swanston Street.

The victim was treated at the scene and taken to hospital for treatment where she is in a stable condition.

Police say the group of six or seven males and two females boarded the NightRider in the city about 2.30am (AEST) on Sunday morning and are perceived to be of African appearance.

They will review CCTV as part of their investigation.

Hawk is not disputing you PH.  He is saying that the fact that bus drivers can't leave their seat is rubbish, not that it's rubbish that they can't leave their seat.

and i still say any rule that says you have to sit there while being hit in the head while driving and not defend yourself is BS

You would be a fool to sit and accept it and not much of a person to sit and allow a passenger to be assaulted. Who would do such a thing?

My husband was so wild tonight that no one would believe what I wrote, but I only got it from him, & Hawke, I am sorry, please accept my appology, I didnt read it right and neither did my husband.

Thing is, here in Melbourne, they have inspectors on the bus, dressed in ordinary every day clothes, bus drivers dont know them, and if they got out of their seat to help someone, they would be in all sorts of trouble.

Back in 2004 my husband was on route work and this guy got on the bus with a knife, with a policeman in hot pursuit, my OH couldnt leave his seat, thankfully, the guy was arrested by the cop, turns out he just killel an old lady, even though things like that are rare, there are some dreadful things that do happen on buses.

The reason they cant get out of their seats to help a lady on with a small child is, the woman can have them up for assault for helping lift a child in a pram......

This is in Victoria, I dont know about the rest of Australia..........no one in their right mind would drive a bus today.........& before anyone says anything, my husband left the job.

TS bus drivers are not fools, they are just men and women doing a job they are paid to do and in doing so, have to abide by the rules of Victoria and the company they work for.

No problem Purple.  I'm surprised anyone will drive the night buses.   They have to rethink the wages for bus drivers. Who wants to deal with drunks and hoons and risk their own safety?

Unfortunately PH there are fools in every walk of life including bus drivers 😞

A BUS driver who repeatedly sent and received text messages while driving at 100km/h on the South Eastern Freeway has been stood down pending an investigation by his employer Southlink.

The driver was filmed by a passenger who sat directly behind him on the bus while on the route 840F from Light Square to Mt Barker last week.

Video taken by the passenger show the driver constantly looking from the road to his mobile phone, which was mounted next to the driver-side window.

The vision shows the driver pick up the phone a number of times to send and receive text messages.
