Woman refused pedicure because of weight

http://au.news.yahoo.com/world/a/-/world/17821686/woman-refused-pedicure-for-being-too-fat/

A woman has recorded the moment she was refused a pedicure from a US nail salon after staff told her she was too large to fit in the chair.

Rachel Bascue was denied treatment at Regal Nails Salon in Hot Springs, Arkansas just one day after her mother was also refused a pedicure at the salon for the same reason.

On her second attempt to have a pedicure Ms. Bascue secretly recorded her conversation with salon staff on her mobile phone.

In the footage a male employee can be heard telling Ms Bascue she is too fat and would break the chair.

"You cannot (fit) over 250 lbs (112kg). You don't fit.

"I've tried to tell you too many times. It's not fit for you. It's dangerous. It's for your own benefit," the employee continued.

Ms Bascue said despite the employees claims, she and her mother had both been treated at the salon in the past without any problems.

She conceded the public humiliated she suffered during the altercation with salon staff was the worst abuse she has experience.

"I have been talked about and made fun of, but this is the first time I was made to feel like a freak," Bascue told NBC.

"I shouldn't be discriminated (sic), nobody should be made to feel like that."

Umm I have opinions about this, but I won't say what they are yet, want to see what others think.

Good grief.

A store owner/manager has the right to refuse service to any prospective customer.  No reason needs to be given.

In this case, the reason was the health and safety of the customer, the employees, the employer and the other customers.

With regards to her humiliation, why on earth go there twice after her mother was refused service?

15 minutes of "fame"?

Health and safety come first.......

The owners have the right to say no.....If she sat in the chair, and broke it (possible injuries).... her solicitor would be the next person she would call....then the papers.....you never how litigious a person is....

I'm sure she has received her share of abusive mail after opening her private life like this.

She opened the door to it.

Opening the door should not make it ok though?

I read her comment as what happened in the salon being the worst abuse she had suffered. She sounded like she was gearing up for a discrimination case.

Re: Woman refused pedicure because of weight

A US story... they have a high proportion of obese people. When we went to theme parks in the US, there were a lot of people there, so obese that they rode the mobility scooters (like disabled and/or elderly people use here) to get around.

Shop owner John Huynh didn’t want to do an on camera interview, but explained that he refused service for the safety of the customer and to protect his investment.

The chairs in his shop cost thousands of dollars and have a manufacturer’s weight limit of 250 pounds.

“I’m probably about 50 or so pounds heavier than that,” says Bascue. “But that still doesn’t give him the right to tell me no when all he had to do was really let me see if I could fit in the chair.”

.....“I think that is discriminating,” argues Bascue. “And it is embarrassing the way they did it. They didn’t even pull me aside and tell me hey…I don’t think you can fit in the chair. They just said no.”......

.....Some salons carry special insurance, buy special chairs or add a surcharge to the bills of obese customers rather than refuse a customer service because of his or her weight.

Re: Woman refused pedicure because of weight

Most of the nail salons (that I have been to in the U.S.) have special massage chairs. I'm sure they are very expensive. The chairs seem to be very sturdy. However, if they are rated to only hold up to 250 pounds, I think the business should be able to refuse service based on that.

Now, if the customer would like to bring in their own chair, and have the salon use a basin to wash, and exfoliate their feet, then the salon should provide that service for them.

Sometimes the technicians wear gloves, and other times they do not. So, if an overweight any woman comes in with exceptionally calloused, or not so clean feet, the girls can always wear gloves.

Yes, some Americans are huge. Others are anorexic. It depends upon what State they live in. I live in the "you better be skinny or you won't be happy" State.
