Woolies Hop To It With Hot Cross Buns

NO, IT'S not a silly season stitch-up.

The bakers at Woolworths have been hopping to it, with hot cross buns already hitting Sunshine Coast supermarket shelves this week.

While most of us are still feeling the effects of Nan's dodgy ham, too many beers, way too much pudding or all of the above, the team at Woolies supermarkets across the Coast has decided it's time to throw the doughy, fruity treats in front of us already.

A Woolworths spokesman said it was nothing unusual: the Easter snacks rolled out of the ovens at the same time every year, during the week following Christmas.

"They are extremely popular," the spokesman said.

"Our customers love them, and they are one of our highest-selling bakery items in the lead-up to Easter."

If December is now the lead-up to Easter, New Year's 2018 merchandise could start hitting shelves within a fortnight, but Woolworths are no bunnies when it comes to business.

"Woolworths expects to sell more than 50 million individual hot cross buns in the months leading up to Easter," the spokesman said.

That's nuthin'. I was walking the aisles at Coles supermarket when some fat bloke in a red suit grabbed me and plonked me on his knee. He asked me what I wanted for Xmas 2015. At one time in our history is was safe in our supermarkets. Now a person is likely to get accosted by all manner of things in our supermarkets.

Yes, the supermarkets started putting out hot cross buns end of December, several years ago. Time people noted that, and stopped writing news stories about it because it ain't new news.
