I would for sure defend the one person and not mention their ideas I don't agree with.

Far too often here you see a single person without a single friend because of their views on one thing or another.

Its about defending what is right and not necessarily the person,

If a person is right I would defend them regardless if I liked them or not.

If they are wrong I would not support them.   

Some times the lines become blurred and what one person sees can sway them in what they see as right or wrong.

I have upset a few people over time because I have said what I believed to be right

Racism is subjective in my eyes.. What one person might see as racist someone else might not. Apparently it's not racist to say that Aussies are stupid drunk bogans, but it's racist to point out that other races are racist also... 

It IS  racist to say Aussies are stupid, drunk bogans.

I don't see anything particularly confusing or subjective in that - it's [plain common sense.

I wouldn't defend the opinion if I thought it wrong, but I would come to a posters aid if I thought they were being misunderstood or bullied or lampooned over it. If I happened to like them.

If I felt hostile toward that poster I would stay right out of it.  Or maybe even throw the odd nasty comment in myself.

I would defend anyone that I felt was being treated unfairly, regardless of opinion, friendship or anything else. Someone being targetted enmasse is extremely unfair.

A little while ago we debated Geert Wilders and his proclaimed views. I expressed my Voltarian view : "I may disagree with what you have to say but I shall defend to the death your right to say it"

To which someone replied: " i wont. i'd much prefer him dead than me."


I do notice some "shoot the messenger" here occasionally.
