You're kidding! Dr Seuss' books are racist now?

Boston: Six Dr Seuss books – including And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street and If I Ran the Zoo – will stop being published because of racist and insensitive imagery, the business that preserves and protects the author’s legacy said.

“These books portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong,” Dr Seuss Enterprises said in a statement on Tuesday, local time, that coincided with the late author and illustrator’s birthday.

“Ceasing sales of these books is only part of our commitment and our broader plan to ensure Dr Seuss Enterprises’ catalogue represents and supports all communities and families,” it said.

The other books affected are McElligot’s Pool, On Beyond Zebra!, Scrambled Eggs Super!, and The Cat’s Quizzer.

The decision to cease publication and sales of the books was made last year after months of discussion, the company said.

“Dr Seuss Enterprises listened and took feedback from our audiences including teachers, academics and specialists in the field as part of our review process. We then worked with a panel of experts, including educators, to review our catalogue of titles,” it said.

Books by Dr Seuss – who was born Theodor Seuss Geisel in Springfield, Massachusetts, on March 2, 1904 – have been translated into dozens of languages as well as in braille and are sold in more than 100 countries. He died in 1991.

The world has truly gone mad.

I understand that some of the illustrations are the main problem.  I can't remember which illustrations in which book but in the report I saw, they showed a page with Asians depicted as little yellow people with slit eyes, pigtails and conical hats and another with Africans as pygmies with topknots and bones through their noses.

Both illustrations could reasonably be offensive, I agree.........so WHY NOT CHANGE THE ILLUSTRATIONS??  I can't remember the text in any of the books and no longer have any Dr Seuss in the house to check if the wording is also an issue.  Does anyone else know?

I just read this over on one of the other boards, think this is fitting:

I think I was born about 30 years too late, I want to be in a time when this idiocy was less obvious

As a kid (many, many years ago!) my favourite books were Noddy by Enid Blyton.
Now regarded as being racist.
The stupid thing is, most of us reading these books, along with Dr Suess, all grew up perfectly normal, without a racist bone in our bodies!
I'm just against the "do-gooders" who seem to have a different agenda.

When I was little, a long time ago, my favourite books were the Noddy books by Enid Blyton.

Now they are regarded as too racist for words...lol!

Dr Seuss seems to joining in the fun, so to speak.

As far as I am concerned, it is up to the parents to make the decision on whether to read these books to their kids.

Most of us have grown up with no ill effects. Possibly also not racist either!
