I heard Tony Windsor this morning talking about the idea of a referendum on gay marriage.
Would you vote for or against gay marriage if it was an option in September's election?

i put myself in the shoes of a gay person. I would feel so hurt, and angry, upset if I truly wish to be married and was unable, yet could be out in public and see couples with wedding rings, drive down the street and see a wedding in progress in a pthink and know that just because I was me, I am not allowed.
Yes, hearing people talk about their pain and anger about this is what convinced me it was conditioning that caused me to not understand why it was an issue. I really could not understand what difference it made whether ss marriage was allowed or not and thought it a waste of time to be constantly arguing over it instead of "important" stuff.

Yep Freaky.
it would be so, so hurtful to be told you can't have what others have because we say you can't. Just because it has always been that way. When it would be so easy to change the law .... and then their lives.

I didn't find any ridicule when asking why or how to change a lifetime of conditioning to believe that marriage was between only a man and woman.
The reason I changed my mind was because the people against had no real reason for their being against other than life long conditioning or religious beliefs. It was when they started talking the slippery slope that s s marriage equals paedophilia and animal marriage while the s s marriage people were talking about their human rights and feeling like second class citizens that changed my mind.
Well said Freaky.

Jean, I kinda like the idea of a referendum because it will mean that a majority of Australians vote for, support, and believe in, the concept of gay marriage. I think that's sweet.
Windsor said yesterday morning that he had voted in Parliament AGAINST gay marriage because he thought that the majority of his electorate wanted that. I get the feeling that both Gillard and Abbott are looking for votes, rather than taking a moral line on the issue.
I think it would be nice if the politics were taken out of gay marriage. I think it would be better if 20 million or so people had their say rather than a few hundred pollies. I think that sends a better message to gay members of the community.
Marriage has changed a lot over time. In the Middle Ages in Europe and the UK, marriages were often arranged between babies or children on the basis of property and wealth. Nothing to do with love. In some places that is still the case. It's only recently that it became a criminal offence to rape a wife in Australia. It was 1967? that married women were allowed to work for the APS. It used to be the case that when a woman married, her property belonged not to her, but her husband.
So, marriage has been redefined over the years to become a more equal institution for women ... I think it's time now to make it more equal 🙂

I agree with what jean posted, and also think a referendum is the fairest way to get the public's view on things.
why isn't religion seen as a good reason for people's beliefs to be based on?
many aspects of people's religion and culture is respected in general everyday life, so why shouldn't they be respected regarding this issue as well.
the people with the loudest voices don't always speak for everyone in society.

I kind of agree with you, but I also feel that just becasue my religious beliefs tell me one thing, doesn't mean I have the right to tell others how to lie their life.
We are all free to have our own religion, so why should we inflict our rules on others who may follow another?
So I believe it should be legal to marry the consenting adult of your choice, if someone's religion tells them not to marry someone of their own gender, then they can follow their beliefs. But others need to be allowed to follow theirs too.
