I often put in lol to soften something I've said so it won't appear offensive.....I don't really laugh at my own jokes as
they're usually lame, lol lol lol.... those last lols are laughin at my own expense....
it's complicated.

The only time I care about the "lols" or misplaced use of emoticons is when they're used to mask otherwise unkind or malicious remarks.
My rule of thumb is if you take them away does the remark seem nasty, then nasty is what was intended.

I think the stigma would be worse if it were attached to someone with an inability to laugh oneself occasionally.

lol icy, I think using the word stigma out of context is what probably threw you off as it would anybody. lol
