Oh for heavens sake there was obviously no malicious intent.
The Aussie accent gets payed out on by many and often.
I have a close kiwi friend and I think if we were to tally up she has paid out on me more than I on her.
It is not the race that the joke is about it's merely the fish and chips.

Probably for the same reason that many people would find Emma Chizzet. or "do yar hens stay in" funny.
On one of our trips to England Mr Elephant and I stayed with an old schoolfriend of mine who had two daughters, two sweet, beautifully spoken little English schoolgirls. One afternoon we were sitting in the garden and Mr Elephant was talking to the girls. After a while the 10 year old leaned forward and said "We're ever so sorry, but we don't speak Australian."
Mr Elephant and I both found that delightfully chuckleworthy - though of course we didn't laugh in front of the girls.
