@silverfaun wrote:So sad to hear the facts of the matter crikey. Agriculture is or was the great engine that drove our countries prosperity.
Having grown up in the bush I do know & understand what you are saying but it's sad just the same.
Thanks for all the info.
yes, it is terribly sad, I don't deny that.
The livestock and the difficulties our farmers face.
and it's all interwoven
so many industries depend so much on each other to be sustainable themselves.
But agriculture is dying.
It's just how it is.
The generalation farmers are leaving, looking for more secure livlihoods and easier lifestyles.
Soon there will be no agriculture left at all if all methods of sustainability are removed.

the farmers also pay a huge levy to the MLA & were also outraged by the killing boxes.
What is the role of the MLA?
What "levy" do the farmers pay?

@debra9275 wrote:thanks Cat I have had extensive talks and emails with my local member over animal export, the reopening of abboitoirs etc.
it is one thing that I personally feel quite strongly about
who is going to pay to open the abbotoirs?
who is going to supply the abbotoirs?
who is going to operate the abbotoirs?
just be sure to make a few bets and attend a few Melbourne Cup Day functions this year, eh?

The MLA are heavily involved..
http://www.mla.com.au/News-and-resources/Publication-details?pubid=5097
Evaluation of the LiveCorp, MLA and Australian Government industry relationship
The industry outcomes observed today in the Australian live animal export market are the result of collaboration between LiveCorp, MLA, the Australian government and industry. This collaborative approach has involved: the Live Export Program (LEP) a joint venture between LiveCorp and MLA; other LiveCorp activities carried out independently of the LEP; the Live Animal Trade Program (LATP) โ which is funded by the Australian government; ? other activities and policy development through Australian Government agencies such as the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade; and industry investment, a continuing commitment to improving animal welfare and structural change in the industry.
