I'll admit some Aussies put way to much emphasis on AFL their life, during footy season their lives seem to revolve around it. But the majority of players and fans are nothing like what you have described in your post. It's not so much the "people" worshipping these players as gods, rather the media just loves to sensationalize them. And the game has become so much about money now and the best players earn waaaay too much imo, the price of entry and memberships is ridiculous and the teams with the most money always triumph.
But just because the media hypes up players does not mean they "are a leading example for the rest of the (male) population." You've been reading too many tabloids imo. They are just people that play a sport and do it well. It's just weekend entertainment for most fans...
