I have 2 dogs, Manchester terriers.

1 is 6 the other about 14 months.

the youngest is so very scared of loud noises. last year he squeezed through the fence during a thunder storm. he just bolted. spent 4 nights all by himself. wouldn't go to anyone.

tonight watching the footy I was yelling, he wanted to get outside.

the older dog was like pfft..............whatever.

can I do anything to fix this?

Yes you can Mr Grizz.  Don't yell during the footy and stop watching Essendon and Carlton.  It's always going to be a screamer.

You cannot change a dog that is sensitive to thunder storms.

I did hear of people making tapes of thunder storms, i think you can even buy them, and playing them over and over getting slowly louder and louder, it worked in the end but it took a long time. It was Dr Harry. It's a matter of desensertising. Good luck with it.

Sometimes its just their makeup and there is nothing you can do but ignore the behavior and putting them somewhere safe when there is a storm coming ect.  I have a little boy who hated thunder storms and would hide under a side table but we just ignored him and he got over it.  He quite happily stays outside in storms now.

Mr Grizz, there is a product called a Thunder Shirt, it is a tight coat that the dog wears, it is very snug on their body. Apparently people have had wonderful results with it.

Not sure of the theory behind it, but it has had excellent reviews. Worth a try, especially after you losing him that time (I remember reading your thread with bated breath until he returned safely)

As Mugsy said, you can buy CDs of taped noises like thunderstorms, fireworks, etc. The CD starts off playing softly then increases in volume. It works to desensitise the dog to loud noises.

Is that what is called  'gun shy'?   Like some dogs are bought/reared to go

hunting and retrieve the prey but can't stand thenoise of the  shots?  Just wondering.  My cavie

experienced her first thunderstorm the other night and she was terrified, I've never had

a dog before who was nervous like that.  .
