i dont use facebook but i did sign up once many years ago, there is nothing in my account information beyond my name.

so fine, i did get several people with my surname wanting to make contact, i never did. after that first time looking at a friends page (thats why i signed up) i never went back.

but i have recieved messages alerting me to people wanting me to 'add' them to my whatever. i just delete the messages.

just recently these messages have been adding the bit 'you have x notifications and x friend requests'

ive been deleting them too.

but the 'notifications' which began with like 4, is now up to 50.

what are 'notifications'? LOL

Notifications are usually just.. notifications that someone has responded to something you wrote, or liked something you commented on or made a post directed to you etc

The reason for notifications is the feed of posts changes all the time so otherwise you could easily miss a reply to a specific post as it could be way down the page within hours.

Notifications show within your facebook account as a drop down menu option.

I make it a rule not to accept friend requests from anyone I don't know. By don't know, I mean someone I have not met either in real life or on some of the forums I am on. Some of those people I have known for up to 18 years so they qualify as 'friends'.

But if a person isn't interested in facebook, it is probably best to delete an account or at least set the privacy tabs to the highest settings.

As for birthday wishes. I often see people mention those they have lost, but usually they phrase it as 'remembering so & so today' & do it on their own facebook page.

I originally joined Facebook because I wanted to see how my (still at home) sons were going. I haven't been allowed in one of their rooms for years. But they both declined my friend request. I keep the account alive just in case they change their minds LOL.

This link is the best I could find on controlling Facebook notifications on all devices. Note it says some Facebook notifications cannot be disabled. I tried the approach suggested by Google, but that advice seems to be out of date. I couldn't find Advanced Notification Settings anywhere.

That's the main reason I joined Fb too-all my kids are married now but I find they don't use email. If i want to keep in touch, I need FB so i can send & receive private messages. It is also great for keeping up with nieces & nephews.

Also.. for anyone who is into family history, tracing their family tree, Ancestry etc it is marvellous. I have been in touch with a long lost side of the family (or should I say, some of the descendants). They are in England and the first thing they asked is-send me a friend request. I did & it is interesting to see a bit into the lives of these distant relatives.

I don't post much (leave my posting to messageboards) but it is a useful way to keep in touch with people. Your sons, if they had any sense, could have accepted your requests but blocked you from seeing most posts. You can still send them private messages I think though.

The slight difference with my situation tho is that my sons live in the bedrooms next to mine. I virtually have to make appointments to see them in between the computer games they play. I thought Facebook may allow me to catch up in between appointments and check out what's happening in their lives. But nup, no go. Tis all a mystery to me!

sounds like they have no idea who puts the roof over their heads, the food in their bellys and power in the devices that amuse them during the time they are awake.
