generator ?

I have a generator - 15 years old but not used very much -  Honda motor. I haven't started it in 5 years but with the expected cyclone conditions and power outs, I thought I may at least be able to keep the fridge/freezer going so as not to lose food again.

Can't start it! Checked Oil levels, filled with petrol, checked plug, put new air filter in - tried starting with choke, without choke, 1/2 choke etc - nothing. It turns over but not firing. Yes, I have the power switch on and the fuel switch on.

Any suggestions from the small engine experts?

TIA

Re: generator ?

Get the tucker out--defrost it ..and eat it over a few days.

Then restock the freezer and sell the generator..just trying to help.................Richo.

Re: generator ?

It will take a lot if pulls to get the fuel to the carby. Check no fuel lines are leaking as the rubber can develop micro cracks while dry

Re: generator ?

Rabbit-squirt some aerostart on the air filter-once it fires up it will keep going.

If not-refer to my first post.----------------------------------Richo.

Re: generator ?

Good luck with starting  it.

Our Council are out in force putting sandbags around everything in sight.

I have just taken all of the drain covers off to let the water run away.

Not very eco PC I know, but better than wading through mountains of mud when it is over.

Had to use the "Start U Barstool" (same as earo start) to get mine going, had to repeat the process a few times as old fuel had gummed up the carby.

Good luck with it.

Re: generator ?

if you get it going, let it run out of petrol rather than turn if off when it's time to put it away.  Fuel will go 'stale' and gum up the carby and stuff if they are left sitting. It's the most common reason for them not to start after they have been sitting awhile.

Also check your exhaust outlet. Sometimes those pesky hornet and wasps will fill it up with mud

Good luck with the weather, hope you dont need the gene

Re: generator ?

Always turn the fuel off and leave the motor running. It will clean out the carby and fuel line. Takes longer to get it going

thanks. bought a can - tried it a few times - it tries to start for 2-3 seconds - I suppose while it's using the aerostart - and then carks it.
