Maybe the young family member was trying their hardest to give a gift card to Peter that he would like, and didnt realise/ didnt know that the art shop didnt stock the materials Peter needed?
Sometimes people make mistakes, not malicious, just unaware?
It was uncommon, but I remember selling a gift voucher to a woman for her friend for a birthday. The 1st lady wanted to treat the 2nd one, but when the 2nd one came into the store, she was so ungracious- finding fault with everything on offer. She said to me 'I dont know why Mary bought a voucher here! Its all too 'good' for me.' When I said that I thought Mary wanted to treat her, she realised that it was a thoughtful and generous gift, and used it to buy a beautiful scarf for herself..saying- I feel like the cat that got the cream!..lol..

You have ti be an absolute plonker to buy a gift card. They are a scam to get free money. They expire. They are seldom the exact amount required by the recipient to purchase the desired items. Requiring either more money to be handed over or money left on the card just becomes extra profit for the business. Stop buying gift cards. They are useless
I buy gift cards for my keen gardening mother.....and in my opinion there's only one place to get them from.
Bunnings.
No fees and no expiry date....not that they'd get the chance. My mother can hardly wait to spend them. 🙂

i think in general, people do put some
effort in and consideration when buying
gift cards.
the idea that they're all 'plonkers' probably
comes from personal experience.

I was lucky enough to be the recipient of a couple of gift cards this Christmas, Bunnings ones, one spent this morning on a new trolley, that can carry 200kg and goes up steps! so I can do stuff around the garden by myself and also move pots up stairs to the deck.
The rest were spent on plants for my new garden, along with some herbs and pots.
I also got one from a bbq place so I could choose a new BBQ for the deck, so I am very pleased with the gift givers thoughtfulness.
I gave gift cards, Coles/myer ones, to my nieces along with a small jewellery gift.
