Not just that you get good quality meat, and the farmer makes more money, but it also means that the animals are slaughtered locally and do not suffer the stress of the journey to the abatoirs.

We live on the mid coast of NSW we have several farmers who run paddock to plate operations which you can order on line and pick up at the weekly growers market. The local butcher also sources his meat from the local farmer. Our eggs are a short 10 minute drive to the farm where you take what you want from a large basket and put the money in an open tin. It works well.
