it is much cheaper to make them yourself. it costs about 1/4 or less if you make them yourself. that applies to ALL food.
i could make pies that cost the same as bought ones if i put truffles into my pies, otherwise they cost a fraction.

i do not buy pies from the supermarket
isn't there an amount of offal in those.
i make our own pies but i use diced steak more leaner that way than using mince although i could mince the steak but we prefer chunky steak pies.

I don't like pies because I know the abattoir that supplies the meat for some of Australia's largest pie producers...and not much beef goes in. Erk.

i don't mind any eeeww things (offals, cartelage if it's properly minced and doesn't leave hard bits in my teeth) in food as long as i can't see them and as long as it tastes good.
i am not an organic puritan or so i just like good tasting food and if that food comes from mc donalds so be it.
the ones we bought from the supermarket were ...hhhmmmm an abomination of what a pie should be like.

supermarket pies leave a lot to be desiredthat's for sure.
where i live we don't have the option of maccas ect as there are no stores like that here.

once a year or so i NEED a maccas burger.
i do not want a real burger it needs to be junky spongy ...stuff.
i went there and they said something about brekky menue **bleep**?
it's bleeding maccas! i want a "burger" for brekky, and they offered me pancakes!

do you make your own pastry?
and poppy seed roll thing (can't remember the real name, but joz will know what I'm talking about), is that something you make?

I know it costs less to make pies, muffins, most things yourself at home, and I do that myself.
For people that have no or little money (as joz was describing) who want their next meal, that is when the pie/spag bol was suggested by a charitiable organistion. The person most likely doesn't have $5-$10 for 1/2 -1 kg of mince, $5 for pastry, any pie tins to cook them in and maybe not even the skills to be able to cook something like that.
