'pull finger out' on gas exploration

Um, what happened to clean coal?

now its gas?

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-03-15/states-need-to-pull-finger-out-on-gas-exploration-canavan-says...

the south australian govt announces its going to build a back up power generator running on gas. a federal minister says, oh right, the SA govt is going to lumber the tax payer with a bill for a huge gas powered power generator.

wasnt the federal govt telling us they were going to build clean coal power generators only a few weeks ago? where ya think they were going to get the cash from? under a magic mushroom. every power company said well we wont be building no new coal fired generators. so that leaves us, the taxpayer.

we end up paying for pretty much everything govts do.

i love footy but i'm much happier to be contributing to power stations and hospitals than football ovals.

ok, we built a water desal plant that we really havent needed "yet" and we keep getting the 'white elephant' chants, but when we next get a prolonged drought i bet those hecklers will be demanding that desal device be running flat out so they can wash their cars on sunday.

somethings you build not knowing if or when you will need them but when the day comes your glad you have them.

like car insurance, ive had it all my life and never used it, same with house insurance.

and what was the first thing the feds said after premier weatheril made the anouncment, we will be asking our lawyers if we can stop them. how dare those south australians decide they cant trust us to build a canoe, or supply power to everyone.

oh, and why doesnt the SA govt just restart the coal powered generator that was closed down, because it was at the end of its useful life. you can only keep very old generators going for so long, they wear out. they prolly should have been shut down years ago but like most of us, we all think that old washing machines going fine.....until it practcally blows up.

https://eyeonlatinamerica.com/2016/01/07/chile-hydropower-atacama-solar-seawater/

The project will make use of the unique natural landscape offered by Chile’s northern coastline, where the Andes mountains drop into the Pacific Ocean, often through a series of remarkably steep slopes and cliffs. The Espejo de Tarapacá will use solar pumps to draw seawater up from the Pacific to a depression, formed from ancient lakes that have long since dried out, located approximately 650m above sea level and within a few kilometres of the coastline, where the water can be stored. The water can then be drawn from the reservoir when required, in the same way as in a traditional hydroelectric dam that is fed by rivers, passing through the 300 MW generators on its way back down to the sea.

In order to do this, the system will use three ‘reversible’ turbines that act as pumps when drawing the seawater up during the day (using solar energy), and as generation turbines when the water passes through them on its way back down at night. The entire operating system – the pipelines and pump-generators – will all be situated underground.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wave_power

http://www.alternative-energy-tutorials.com/wave-energy/wave-energy.html

Wave energy is actually a concentrated form of solar power generated by the action of the wind blowing across the surface of the oceans water which can then be used as a renewable source of energy. As the suns rays strike the Earth’s atmosphere, they warm it up. Differences in the temperature of the air masses around the globe causes the air to move from the hotter regions to the cooler regions, resulting in winds.

As the wind passes over the surface of the oceans, a portion of the winds kinetic energy is transferred to the water below, generating waves. In fact, the ocean could be viewed as a vast storage collector of energy transferred by the sun to the oceans, with the waves carrying the transferred kinetic energy across the surface of the oceans.

Then we can say that waves are actually a form of energy and it is this energy and not water that moves along the ocean’s surface.

These waves can travel (or “propagate”) long distances across the open oceans with very little loss in energy, but as they approach the shoreline and the depth of the water becomes shallower, their speed slows down but they increase in size. Finally, the wave crashes onto the shoreline, releasing an enormous amount of kinetic energy which can be used for electricity production.

A breaking waves energy potential varies from place to place depending upon its geographic location and time of year, but the two main factors which affect the size of the wave energy are the winds strength and the uninterrupted distance over the sea that the wind can blow.

Re: 'pull finger out' on gas exploration

who is saying wave technology isnt a possibly good source of power generation?

the discussion is about generating power via salt water through a boiler system creating steam to turn a turbine versus using clean water using the natural fall from height to turn turbines ie: the snowy mountain system.

are you saying salt water isnt corosive and therefore wont destroy the boilers much faster than clean water?

has anyone built or said they were going to build a wave technology power station in australia? will they do it by next summer?

whats the point of your posts?

of course there are still steam powered trains but do you see any in australia pulling anything except tourists around in vintage carriages?

The Uniflow Generator is a small scale, reciprocating steam engine for production of heat and power using the lowest grade woody and waste fuels. Presently designed for production of 5kW of electricity the Uniflow Generator is a 21st century steam engine with potential to provide power where ever a small diesel or petrol generator might otherwise be used – and in places where diesel and petrol are not available at all!

Re: 'pull finger out' on gas exploration

Yes, I thought our gas supplies were already committed away to export contracts for something llike the next 40 yrs or so. Looks like any new gas-fired generator is going to have to source its gas from new supplies.

Looks like we're about to be fracked again by the lousy govt-industrial-buisness complex.

Oh dear oh dear... terrible, what name did the simpleton call you? Re replying to the threads on a public forum. If you would prefer replies that agreed with your stance perhaps you could make the threads private and then you could debate with yourself. ie If you can't handle the heat stay out of the kitchen... you (pull your finger out) fracker.

I notice the Snowy in the news this morning...  an avant garde village idiot... thank you very much
