'pull finger out' on gas exploration

Um, what happened to clean coal?

now its gas?

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-03-15/states-need-to-pull-finger-out-on-gas-exploration-canavan-says...

the south australian govt announces its going to build a back up power generator running on gas. a federal minister says, oh right, the SA govt is going to lumber the tax payer with a bill for a huge gas powered power generator.

wasnt the federal govt telling us they were going to build clean coal power generators only a few weeks ago? where ya think they were going to get the cash from? under a magic mushroom. every power company said well we wont be building no new coal fired generators. so that leaves us, the taxpayer.

we end up paying for pretty much everything govts do.

i love footy but i'm much happier to be contributing to power stations and hospitals than football ovals.

ok, we built a water desal plant that we really havent needed "yet" and we keep getting the 'white elephant' chants, but when we next get a prolonged drought i bet those hecklers will be demanding that desal device be running flat out so they can wash their cars on sunday.

somethings you build not knowing if or when you will need them but when the day comes your glad you have them.

like car insurance, ive had it all my life and never used it, same with house insurance.

and what was the first thing the feds said after premier weatheril made the anouncment, we will be asking our lawyers if we can stop them. how dare those south australians decide they cant trust us to build a canoe, or supply power to everyone.

oh, and why doesnt the SA govt just restart the coal powered generator that was closed down, because it was at the end of its useful life. you can only keep very old generators going for so long, they wear out. they prolly should have been shut down years ago but like most of us, we all think that old washing machines going fine.....until it practcally blows up.

Re: 'pull finger out' on gas exploration

"I am just glad that the government is starting to look at the upgrades that were forecast all those years ago.   By the time they get around to doing anything it will be so long overdue that we will probably be in the same mess that SA is in now."

Funny isnt it, until 2 days ago when informed by Big Mal that the snowey was in for a major upgrade the 2 states who own it knew nothing about any upgrade.

Big Mal, the MAN WITH A PLAN LOL, I loved how he said " what projects like this need is good leadership and MONEY,

AND I HAVE BOTH!

So where is all that MONEY comming from? he wont say. he blabbers about the 2 states contributing but he cant compel them to. so why would they after he has said he would flit the bill if they didnt?

heres a man whos got a treasurer telling us all we have this huge debt and must cut our spending, but his boss just pops out of nowhere offering to spend 2 billion dollars!

Big Mal is actually PM Flip Flop, constantly changing his PLAN, first its Clean Coal and NEW power stations that will FIX all our power troubles.

Then its GAS, MORE GAS HE SHOUTS!

Now its THE SNOWEY THATS OUR SAVIOUR!

i truly wonder what his next BIG THOUGHT BUBBLE will be.

I am sure the government is not going to admit that they were warned that an upgrade would need to be done within 50 years.  Does any government ever admit to ignoring the advice of the experts at the time?

And certainly the states would not have known that anything was going to be done until it was announced by the PM....but ask if they were aware that it was going to be needed and you may get a different answer.

The designers of the scheme certainly knew about it.

I was talking about the upgrade Big Mal just anounced, not wether or not they knew of any upgrades need from the past. just that a 2 billion dollar spend was anounced without having any meetings with the owners.

you think Big Mal would like to renovate my home? he doesnt need to ask me i'll just accept.

I grew up in Maroubra Bushie so not far from you.

Have you asked your mother about the blackouts of the 40s and early 50s?   Are you old enough to remember them yourself?

The Federal Government is a part owner of the public company Snowy Hydro Ltd along with NSW and Victoria.  Why would any part owner object when another part owner offers to put money into an upgrade of their joint asset?

Re: 'pull finger out' on gas exploration

The inability to install new generating capacity during wartime and the pent up demand of the post war years caused serious power supply shortages in all Australian States except South Australia in the late ‘forties and early ‘fifties.
These were made worse by a prolonged and severe drought on the hydro-electric catchments of Tasmania, and coalshortages in all the mainland States.

That's in this link,(it's a 20 page pdf report).

Re: 'pull finger out' on gas exploration

Thanks for finding and posting that report Tazz.  It confirms that my memory is not playing tricks on me.

It also brings back a lot of memories.  My Dad started his apprenticeship at Bunnerong Power Station in the 1930s and worked there throughout the War.

He was one of the designing engineers on the Snowy Scheme as well as Wallerawang, Wangi and Tallawarra Power Stations.  I can remember the trips away to oversea the building.
