I agree. Welfare dependancy kills initiative and productivity and leads to criminality.

Certainly, people in need should get community and government assistance for food and housing, education, but too many are sitting at home with no reason to get out of bed in the morning and make a living for themselves.

I don't necessarily think they are too generous at all. For those genuinely in need, it isn't easy.

Welfare dependency is quite a different thing.

And yes, it can be a problem.

But there are still a lot of people out there who are the working poor. Not everyone who receives a subsidy of some kind is sitting at home doing nothing.

I do know a lot of people working long hours just to be able to pay for their mortgage and living on pittance. They're better off on the dole and go surfing.

If they are already struggling to pay a mortgage, how is being on the dole going to help them?

Would most people think  going  surfing every day  was better than having a roof over your head?

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I mean you can be on a dole living in government housing and go surfing. Some people don't have an urge or need to own their own place. I remembered watching a story on A current Affair where these people are happy living on the dole.

And some people do have an urge to own their own place and would not be happy living on the dole.  Which group do you reckon is in the majority?

Not middle- and upper-class welfare. Which are certainly too generous.

Not such an issue if there was the requirement and allocation of even 1 hour per day community related work  - still enough time for

surfing , after fishing out  a few pest carp or clearing a few meters of railway easement - but of course there is no doubt logical reasons

why even that token gesture of nobility would be a no-starter in our risk aversion society - someone might get sun burnt or bitten by an

irrate bilby
