"It's Not Even a Debate"!

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has claimed the date of Australia Day should not be changed despite fierce debate over the issue in recent years.

Many Indigenous leaders have been pushing for the date of Australia Day to be moved from January 26, the date that marks the First Fleet landing in 1788 and the beginning of British colonisation.

A new survey released by the Institute of Public Affairs on Monday said despite the debate, 71 per cent of Australians were in favour of keeping the date as is.

The poll found the 71 per cent believe “Australia has a history to be proud of” and “Australia Day is an authentic way for Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians to celebrate being Australian”.

On Monday morning Sunrise breakfast show co-host Samantha Armytage grilled Mr Morrison over whether he agreed with the results of the poll or if he thought the date should be changed.

Good on him!

Please cut and paste the comments where I supported the coal industry.............Nope ?.... it aint there is it.

I,m simply being pragmatic instead of jumping on some populist Rah Rah bandwagon of emotional, unrealistic BS..

"Are the regular contributors to these forums who oppose coal mining willing to accept a 16% reduction in their wages / social security payments / standard of living plus a tripling of their electricity bill on top of the 16% reduced income in order to have coal mining and exports banned ? And lets not forget forcing the closure of what is left of our manufacturing industry forcing tens of thousands of families onto unemployment benefits.

Because that is precisely what opponents of the coal industry are arguing for."

These are specious arguments. Where did the 16% figure come from?

I,m not very good with computers and links  I,m afraid, but if you google " Australias top ten exports 2019 " You will find plenty of articles on the first page which will verify that Coal overtook Iron ore in 2018 to be our largest single export earner. In 2018, coal made up 15% of our total exports. In 2019 coal exports increased by over 10% while exports of iron ore shrunk by several %, strengthening coals place as our number one export income earner..

WHERE DOES THIS SAY I SUPPORT THE COAL INDUSTRY ...... IT DOESNT........ITS SIMPLY STATING WHAT THE IMPACTS OF CLOSING THE INDUSTRY WILL BE AND ASKING IF RESPONDERS ARE WILLING TO ACCEPT THAT COST........FOR THE RECORD, IM NEITHER FOR OR AGAINST COAL, IM JUST REALISTIC ABOUT IT

Spoiler
Unlike many responders on this forum who frankly seem to live in some idealistic Labor LAH LAH land.

You made the claim (16%) so it is up to you to provide the source for your claim. It's not up to me to do anything.

Australia Day: January 26 marks a massacre in NSW. Will a cement plaque really help?

Got one of the kids to help with a link. This one ( from dfat, a government agency ) gives 2018 figures and shows coal at the top of the list at 15.3% of our total exports. In 2019 coal exports rose by over 15 %. When the kids get home I might try to find a link for that just to keep you happy.

@ johcaschro - Maybe you should have done some research on the coal industry before you started making silly, uninformed  posts on a subject you obviously know nothing about. I suppose its too much to expect an apology for the accusation of making stuff up ?

And where did you get this "16%" figure from, anyway? Do you have a link for that?

Used the trick the kids showed me ..........This is the first link I found ( I,ve proved my point and not going to waste any more time showing you know ZIP about the subject you are commenting on......you,ve already done that for me ) for " coal exports Australia 2019 " which show increases in 2019 and projected increases in 2020 etc.

Still waiting for that apology !!!

So far, Dave is the only person on this forum who has had the courage to say he would accept a 16% reduction in his living standard in exchange for closing the coal industry in Australia.

Me I'm sitting on the fence on this one. If the rest of the world followed with dramatic changes to their emissions I would probably agree. Without the rest of the world agreeing to similar action it would turn Australia's economy into a train wreck of monumental proportions and all for nothing. The rest of the worlds economies would continue on as normal without us and the earth would continue to get hotter.

The silence of the rest of the Coal naysayers on this forum says it all. We should ban Coal, but don't take away 16% of my pension or wage. Everyone wants to jump up and down about banning coal so long as some-one else is paying for it.....
