"Shock-Jock" Alan Jones Retires

Alan Jones, Australia's most influential radio broadcaster, will retire at the end of this month, saying doctors had told him his workload was "detrimental" to his health.

The 79-year-old 2GB breakfast host has towered over Sydney's media, and Australian politics, for decades.

His breakfast program has topped the Harbour City's radio ratings since he began in the timeslot in 2001.

During his broadcast this morning Jones told listeners: "We are living in the world of coronavirus. The most repeated statement we hear is 'we must listen to the experts'."

"Well, the experts are telling me in no uncertain terms, and not for the first time I might add, 'continuing with the present workload is seriously detrimental to your health'.

"I have listened to the experts and I am taking this opportunity to indicate to my radio family that I will be retiring from radio at the end of this month.

Despite calling quits on his radio career, Jones will continue to broadcast on Sky News and write for The Daily Telegraph and The Australian.

I'll miss listening to the old bugger in the mornings!

I don't mind Ben Fordham, but I think Ray Hadley would have been a better choice,

He also said Jacinda should get a couple of backkhanders

Any talk about violance against women is disgusting as is any one who thinks it is funny

What he actually said:

"The broadcaster wondered on-air whether Scott Morrison would be briefed to “shove a sock down her throat” and said he hoped the Prime Minister “gets tough here with a few backhanders”."

I agree icy, Jones was totally out of line, appalling comments made by a little man.  Thanks for pointing out the error in lionrose's post.

lionrose said "a couple" but Jones actually said "a few".  I was always taught that a few was more than a couple.

I agree with you icy that what he said was worse than what lionrose said Jones had said.

Jones has said some horrid things about certain women. In addition to what many see about his negative attitude towards certain religions and ethnicities, he has this bad attitude towards women. Strange though, one woman who hardly does any wrong in his etes is the one who shares his negative attitude towards certain religions and ethnicities.

Look. I agree. What Jones said was way out of line. I was dismayed that he would say such a thing.

But he didn't actually say Jacinda Ardern should cop a "couple" of backhanders, as lionrose claimed, or even a "few" backhanders..

His words , according to the article linked, were  'he hoped the Prime Minister “gets tough here with a few backhanders”.'

Jacinda Ardern was not named as the recipient of said "backhanders".

Nor did he say she should have a "sock shoved down her throat".

Again, according to the linked article: 'The broadcaster wondered on-air whether Scott Morrison would be briefed to “shove a sock down her throat”.'

No excuse, of course, but not exactly as claimed, either.

Re: "Shock-Jock" Alan Jones Retires

Alas, poor Alan - he should have remembered what  they say about learning from history:

"Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?" (also expressed as "troublesome" or "meddlesome priest") is a quote attributed to Henty II of England  which preceded the death of Thomas Becket the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1170. While it was not expressed as an order, it prompted four knights to travel from Normandy to Canterbury where they killed Becket. The phrase is commonly in modern day used to express the idea that a ruler's wish can be interpreted as a command by his or her subordinates.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Will_no_one_rid_me_of_this_turbulent_priest%3F

And I guess that applies whether the 'ruler' rules a country or merely the airwaves. Alan  should consider himself lucky his subordinates are not quite as enthusiastic as Henry's were.
